I went to the auto parts store at lunch today to get bearings and seals for my 9" rear end. I told them it was a rear axle from a 78 F150 4x4, it's a 9", 31 spline, etc...
They asked me if it was a 3300, 3600, or 3750 and I had no idea what the heck they were talking about.
Can anyone tell me how to find out which one I have?
Do you have tapered roller bearings on the axles or Ball Bearings? Can you see ball Bearings or do the bearings have a shield preventing you from seeing them? If you have the tapered roller style, when you pulled the axles, the outer race should have stayed in the housing. If they are the ball bearing style the bearing number is 514003bca, and the seal is 51098 National, if it is the tapered style, it is called (set20)timken and bearing and seal come as a unit. Hope this helps

I have the tapered roller bearings and the outer race does stay in the axle housing.
Your info helps me a great deal, but the morons at the auto parts store are still asking if it's a Spicer44 or Spicer 60. I think they're stoned because the guy I talked to yesterday said he knew what I needed and I should come in and look at them. Today, they can't figure it out.
He did say that they don't carry timken and that Auto Zone does. I think I'll call there.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Jun-02 AT 05:35 PM (EST)]Kevin, go to auto zone and ask for a set 20 Bearing, And I believe auto zone sells the seal seperately which is a national number 3195. Normally when you buy the real Timken bearing as a set 20, Bearing and seal come as a unit. Good luck.
It is a 9", as you well know. I to get tired of dealing with countermen that do not know how to read the catalogs
