I love fords, so I bought my wife a '94 bronco-302--e4od.
I am having problems with this thing. I have had experience with this trans before and it resulted in a rebuild, however, this one is acting totally different, It's problems are only showing themselves somtimes. It sometimes won't shift directly in gear-engages in 1st fine and when it goes to shift to 2nd it will surge a couple of times and start flashing the od light. If you give it more or less throttle, it will shif, and it does the same thing in the 2-3 shift. I serviced the trans(filter change& all fluid incl. torque conv.)to no avail. I hav my mechanic hook it up to a snap-on scanner and it said: excessive converter clutch slippage and somthing bad in the pressure valve circuit. I know that The pressure valve can cause the converter to slip when it malfunctions. What should I do, my wife loves the thing, but I really hate to have the trans. rebuilt unless it is totally necessary. PLEASE HELP!!!! any ideas or commentsat all are welcome. I have heard of this alot from the e4od tranny. usually a rebuild from a good mechanic will do the fix when new aftermarket parts are put in. ford had a bad problem with these developing alot of clutter or where it would shift back and forth. It fixed ours with a rebuild.:-X23
I just had my E4OD rebuilt, $1800! Anyway, converter clutch slippage causes very hard shifts, not what you describe. The pressure valve problem is more like it. That can be changed by dropping the pan. The rebuild may be just around the corner. Mine had 116k on the odometer. Please go to a reputable independent transmission shop, not Aa**o.
Check all the electrical connections to your trans
there are 4, 2 on trans, 2 under master cylinder.
My 92 was dropping into neutral, not shifting, banging gears
nobody could figure it out till a friend at the dealership told me what to look for. Clean the connectors with some contact cleaner and regrease them, dosen't take more than a few minutes and cured my
truck. Was throwing codes for MLPS, Torque converter slippage, speed sensor failure. Was doing it 2-3 times a week, has been months now
still no codes and working fine (knock on wood).
Thanks for all the advice. I once again ran the scan that niftly $6000 computer. While driving with scanner hooked up, everything was fine, without it , it was crap. We notice some minor voltage variation in the gear selector switch so I replaced it(only $50 so why not) to no avail including the plug. I also pulled the other plug from the other side of the trans. ang cleaned it to no avail. Then I decided to clean the 2 plugs attached to the fender well and presto, bad connection. I also greased the receptacles before reinstalling, and everything is now working perfect. The plugs were not corroded and the ones that was having the ill effect weren't even very dirty. The two under the vehicle looked like crap but were fine. Damn computers. Anyway, so far, so good. Thanks, Ed
