Hey got a 99F150 I just installed a new Pioneer DEH-4100UB and Pioneer two way 6x8" speakers front and rear. I was stupid and lazy and in a hurry and didn't solder or shrink wrap the wires. (I mean people get away with using tape all the time! right?)
I've got a hum on all four speakers barely audible over the music if at all. But when I switch to auxillary input and crank the volume it's definitally there. It almost seems like it's cycling or something. Also it happens whether the truck is running or not.
Do you think it's the head unit wiring harness? I'd prefer not to pull the speakers out and solder them. but the head unit harness I can take inside and do on a bench so it's not a problem. lol. I know I should do it all but don't trust myself with a soldering iron in a vehicle.
any idea what the cause is likely to be? and thanks in advance.
the head unit has been grounded to the ground in the factory plug. Should I have used a chassis ground? I've never had a problem grounding a HU this was in the past.
Okay, couple more questions. So I decided this morning that on my next days off I am going to pull the harness for the HU out, solder all connections and insulate the wires with heat shrink tubing, I should have done that from the beginning but like I said I was in a hurry.
So will it do any permanant damage to anything driving around like this for another four or five days?
I've decided to go to a chassis ground (just to be safe). The bolts in the support bracket the back of the factory radio rested on look like they would make a good ground to me(being all bare metal connected to the inside of the dashboard) how do you feel about them/what would you use?
crum71 when you installed yours did you hook it in to the dimmer? as the head unit has the option to dim when the headlights are turned on. I didn't and while the unit isn't too bright I just hate having that option unused.
I used a a Metra Turbowire 70-1771 harness which has an orange wire for illumination (which I'm using) and an orange/white wire for the dimmer according to the package.
The wire itself is labeled with dimmer.ground. I'm 95% sure this wire could be just the hooked to the orange and white for lighting on the head unit. but at the time I had to have the whole thing installed in like 15 minutes and figured it better safe than sorry.
