I just started rebuilding a 351w and ran into a problem,
Started by torquing the main bearings in three steps
then I turned engine over by hand (with a wrench)
Then I torqued the arp rod bolts in two steps (25 then 45 lbs) The engine would no longer turn over by hand. After I completely removed 4 of the rod caps it would just barely turn over by hand.
Question: Should I be able to turn over the engine by hand with only the rod and main bearings tightened
It will be more difficult to turn when you torque down the rod caps.
Are you using assembly lube on all of the bearing surfaces? Did you check the end play on the crankshaft after tightnening the main caps? What have you done to the rotating assmebly?
Am using asembly luben all bearing surfaces, and crank has been
machined and balanced but have not checked end play on the crank shaft
How do you check end play?
Position a dial indicator at the end of the crankshaft. Position a prybar so you can push the crankshaft foward or back; this shouldn't take much pressure and you can pry between the the thrust cap and the crank throw. Then, zero the dial indicator and push the crankshaft in the opposite direction. The needle should move; I think 4 to 7 thou is ideal.
