Not sure exactly what it'll take but I imagine it should be relatively easy. I've done a fair amount of work and had engines in and out of '80-'86 trucks. Check out Bronco Graveyard for mounts for a small block that will bolt up to your frame mounts. If you're lucky that may be all you need, and possibly relocate trans crossmember (cake).
I'm doing a 351w to 460 swap in my '86 F-250 this weekend. After I'm done a buddy rom work and I will be rebuilding my old 351w/ZF5 and dropping it in his '93 straight six shortbed. Will also be converting his from 2WD to 4WD at the same time. These trucks really are easy to work on.
yeah im still learning, i mean dont get me wrong i dont know it all yet, but this straight six has been givin me hell, and its mainly due to what the PO did to it before. so i looked around for other things to drop in.
i figure i take out this straigt six.. sell it for maybe 200 use that money for some good decent parts, and drop in a 351W or C and havea v8. parts would be much easier to find, and alot better off.
can anyone tell me what vehicle to find the 351W in? im currently looking for a half put together block so i can build it up
i'd keep the I6 just in case you decide the V8 sucks, i'm doing the same thing and while im driving my new V8 i'm gonna build my I6. if i decide the v8 sucks i'll drop the I6 back into it, if not i'll sell it!
If you want to use the same tranny, then you need the 351W. They first appeared sometime in the 70's, but after 1980 for sure all of the 351's were windsors. Look in fullsize cars, vans and trucks until 97 (for the trucks anyway)
Youl'll need the frame perches for the 302/351w for it to work.
The rad should work along with 90% of everything you need.
after 1980 for sure all of the 351's were windsors.
Actually, the M-block was used through 1982.
From Bubba's site:
The ultimate cruel irony in the M-block’s history was that it was so well adapted to first-generation emission control systems, it was not easily updated to work with more modern electronic engine management systems that emerged in the late '70s and early '80s, and it was dropped from production at the end of the 1982 model year.
...
Ford began to gradually phase the M-block out of trucks from MY 1980 through MY 1982. Beginning in MY 1980, the 400 was dropped from the engine lineup for Broncos and F150 pickups. The 351M and 400 were dropped from all but the F250HD and F350 models by the end of MY 1981, and they were dropped completely at the end of MY 1982.
I really don't want to be the one that says this... But someone needs to!
I don't mean to be rude, Insulting, belittling, discouraging, offending or anything of the sorts.
But are you sure you are ready to do a task of this magnitude?
I followed your multiple Duraspark conversion threads and I remember you asking someone to come by and stuff the distributer for you, doing and engine swap is way way more challenging and an engine rebuild even more so!
I highly recommend you keep the 6 and keep learning, Learn and understand how everything on your truck works.
Bitting off more than one can chew leads to discouragement and project completion failure.
Like I said, I don't want to offend or discourage you, I think it's great your wanting to do this stuff, but a little at a time as your abilities and comfort level grow.
