To add to what Cris said, they hold quite a bit more than the number in the owner's manual. When I dropped my tank to do the mods, I had it pretty much empty, and when I filled it to the neck, it took right around 34.5 gallons. That's from dead-empty (minus the pint or so sloshing around in the bottom that the pump couldn't get out). The 38 holds something like 42 or 43 gallons (someone check me there). Oh, and the Excursions have a 44 gallon tank, that must hold close to 50...
EDIT: And I have put in over 31 before. There was a bit of pucker factor when I made that run, but now I know there was about three more gallons in there. LOL
Mine is a 38 but if you're a weird-o like SuperDuty4X4 you have some crazy stainless steel aftermarket, no one knows where it came from and I want one, 50g tank that will take you 2/3's of the way across the country!!! I want one!!!!!!
Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention...... Early 99 F250 Super Duty, 7.3L extended cab (AKA supercab) long box 4X4
