What is the right way to cure rear end slop. I have about an inch of overall slop (by turning the drive line it move about an inch from side to side until the gears bind). Is this usually caused by the ring/pinion or the spider gears..
This is an accumulative situation usually.
Backlash can be a result of the following
Ring an pinon gears
plus
spider gears
plus
axle splines
you would most definitely have to look in side to see
The Sterling diff is built with a generous amount of backlash, that is the way the gear set is designed. How many miles are on the diff, do you tow with it? What size tires? The other common thing with this diff is they hammer out the splines in the yoke, causing excessive rotation.
It has 135k on it right now. It has 33" tires and I do about 20% towing and 80% freeway. The "clunk" just gets to me after awhile and was wondering how to get rid of it besides the old CHEBY fix, SAWDUST......
I would seek out a reputable Differential shop, let them do a diff service, check rotation in degrees, check backlash, check for worn splines in the yoke, check for side to side in the carrier, check for worn side gears and axles. Please post your results if you decide to have it checked out, that's the first step.
