ya, the BIG Big haul trucks run inline sixes 700 hp and 1400 ft/lbs torque. My dads company runs a MAC(i cant remember model #), but they haul 60 ton loads all the time, anything over that requires lots of planning and 9 axles and the truck/trailer weights 30 tons by itself. But that truck is a hoss, and when its loaded it can take a long time to get moving and even longer to stop(which gets a little scary)
yeah i work in the shop for peterbilt (best big rigs on the road) and a local cattle hauler pulling for vanee livestock has his peterbilt 379 up to 1000hp. which ballpark suggests round 3500 ft.lbs of torque i think its a cat I6 even bone stock rigs with 550hp have 1850 ft.lbs of torque caterpillar (CAT), cummins and detroit are the big names in big rig engines and all the newer ones are I6 i think they've pretty much phased out the v8s, they rev too high and weigh to much in my 9 months at peterbilt ive seen 1 v8 and it was in a 1984 peterbilt 359, some rich guy with a lot of toys has it with chrome valve covers and tubing/plumbing to boot even the locally owned/operated 1961 peterbilt 351 needle nose has an I6 cat in it...
anyway it must be an auto thing my uncles 96 f150 4x4 5 speed pulls a 23 foot fifth wheel camper up and down logging trails in the mountains to remote hunting/camping locations if i remember correctly an auto tranny can eat up over 20% of hp up to 40% of the torque at the flywheel
sorry for the long post i have too much time on my hands
