Paint Flakes

I have a 1988 F150 that is suffering from the infamous paint flaking off. Do I need to take all the paint off or can I sand, primer and paint over what is still there?

I wouldn't. I'm guessing it's peeling from the primer up, meaning it doesn't have a good bond/adhesion. I'd sand it down at least to the primer and start from scratch. Different causes for this problem depending on the existing paint. Even the factories have had recalls on this problem especially with a silver, gunmetal colors. Bad flash times, poor prep etc. Better to do it once right than do it twice. A good auto paint supply store will be able to advise on a good product to make sure it doesn't happen again. I do not recommend products, let the supplier take the heat on this one.

I have painted too many GM and Fords that had this problem. Best thing to do is to sand down to bare metal and start over again. There was an issue of adhesion between the primers and paint. It will only continue to flake off, especially on places like the hood, roof, doors and bed sides.
