I went to start my truck this morning and the start would turnover, but was't engaging. I looked under the truck and the housing cracked on the starter. I have two questions for you guys.
1. What would cause the starter housing to crack? I checked the bolts on the starter alittle over a month ago when I was changing my oil and they were tight.
2. Where should I purchase a new starter from? I really need one today so mail order probably isn't going to work.
sometimes the the shaft breaks and the next time you hit it, it will crack the housing, it'll just engage the back oof the housing b/c there's so much torque...you should be able to find a replacement at any of the box stores, but be prepared...you won't get a core credit b/c yours is cracked.
Well its worse than I originally thought. It turns out the block adapter broke, which in return cause the starter to crack. I wish it was only a starter, now I have to puul the trans to to change the adapter. What a wonderful weekend its going to be!

Anyone ever change this before?
That is what I was afraid of. Yes I have heard of it but not experienced it. Best of luck on a lot of heavy work. Be careful the tranny is about 500#'s.
I found the adapter plate now I need to get to work. Anyone have suggestions on doing this? If I am unbolting the trans is there anything I should do to it while its out?

I don't know how many miles you have on it, but you might consider replacing the front seal behind the torque converter. I would also drain the torque converter and change the transmission oil.
thanks for the advise vettdvr, but I am actually going to have the trans rebuilt. The garage will replace the adapter plate for me, so I kind of will kill two birds at one time. I am just not really up to pulling the trans to replace the adapter. The trans has 120,000 miles on it and it periodically won't go into reverse unless I shift to drive first. Some guys on the forum said it was a sign of the from shaft bearing going bad, which causes the pump to fail.
Hopefully by this time next week it will be fixed.
