After receiving my truck back from having about $5k worth of warranty work done to engine and trans, I noticed that the dealer spliced an inline filter into the return side of the trans fluid between the cooler and the existing filter. It's a Ford filter and I'm wondering what purpose it serves that wasn't being served previously and what its periodicity for replacement might be.
I have that filter on my other truck (1989 IDI) with a Motorcraft rebuilt C6 trans. Thats the only way they will warranty the trans. Sounds like your added on filter was an overkill and a waste of money. You already have a canister filter setup. Thats an extra filter you have to replace now.
The filter they added is an in-line (not by-pass) filter which is made by Magnefine company.
Ford uses these little filters on most/all rebuilt tranny's and if something is suspected. There is a TSB on this issue and the filter is part of the rebuild kit.
Many also use this same filter on the p/s fluid systems.
It is a great filter and has a by-pass pressure relief valve in it. The filter has a magnet in it as well so it is catching ferous metal particals on the megnet and the paper filter is catching the rest of the stuff.
Your dealer did a good thing for you and the filters only cost $15.00 on-line if you wish to continue using them.
Check out the thread below. It relates to p/s fluid but is this the filter that was installed?
