So far this year I know of at least 5 morons who have killed themselves by wrapping their car around a tree.

All single vehicle incidents. People feel sorry for the kids that died. I might sound calloused, but I don't. They were all driving EXTREMELY recklessly. I am happy to see that they hurt nobody but themselves and the tree they hit.
Yes you can say their parents were hurt mentally, but they should be if they were so oblivious that they didn't know their kids were running around at 120mph on winding back roads.

Ship Boy: So are you telling me that as soon as someone hits 21 it is no longer dangerous for them to talk on the phone or text while driving? Interesting concept you have there.

Connecticut has a policy of no cellphones for drivers under 18 and hands-free for all else. Rarely is it enforced and it doesn't appear to have reduced any accidents. Do I disagree with banning cell phones while driving? No. Do I disagree with discriminating against a certain age group? Yes.

Apparently in the minds of the idiot politicians in CT someone who just got their license yesterday and is 18 is safe and therefore allowed to talk on their phone while driving, yet someone who is 17 and has had their license over a year is still somehow more unsafe than the 18 year old who got their license yesterday? I don't get it.

That being said I do not talk on the phone while driving and to be quite honest I barely talk on the phone at all and wouldn't use it ever if it were up to me. I use maybe 10 minutes per month on my phone and I have texting shut off completely because I was getting text telemarketers and they were costing me money. I just don't agree that one age group is inherently more safe than another. It's complete BS.

If you want to see a demographic that needs phones banned take a look at the middle-aged women. They are busy trying to put on makeup, yell at little Johnny in the back seat, and talk on the phone all at the same time. If that isn't unsafe I don't know what is.

Let me personalize this a little. On the day before I got my license my mom was taking me to school. The light turned green, but we weren't going anywhere. I looked over and she was sending someone an email on her blackberry. I told her the light was green and she ought to put her blackberry down. So a few minutes later the car starts drifting left so I look over and she's on that freakin blackberry again. I pull the wheel right to avoid hitting the oncoming truck and flip out on her.

Is your email/phonecall/text so important as to risk your life and mine? No. Don't do it.

Sorry for the rant.

Ive given up texting while driving. My phone has a stylus to type with and its actually challenging to text with two hands unless the road is straight for a long stretch. Its just not worth the effort. Talking on the phone is a different story, I have bosses to answer to. If I start ignoring phone calls Ill be in for some trouble.

yo momma?

Sorry, just had to.

I don't text and drive. I hardly ever text, maybe once or twice a week. As for driving and talking, I have my bluetooth.

Shipboy, I hope you're not serious about jamming cell phone transmissions. Police equipment work on cell phone transmissions, and for you to jam an emergency transmission could be bad for numerous parties. What about if you're driving along in the curb lane, and disconnecting everybody's calls on the sidewalk? Or interrupting debit transactions? Your plot seems half baked.

We had a young lady get killed by texting last week. Went off the road overcorrected and wrecked. Found out she was texting at the time of the accident. I don't see why we need to have a specific law for it when we have inattentive driving laws already on the books. People these days seem to think they are going to die if they don't answer that stupid phone or text right now. Trouble is they might die if they do.

They are outlawed--it's called "inattentive driving". It used to be that things like this could be left to the judgement of the police officer and the judge, but our screwed up court system and litigious society has eschewed personal responsibility and judgement in favor of nit-picky nanny laws.

hey petey. I agree on everything except the oblivious parents part. If your not in the car with them how are you supposed to know how fast or dangerous thier driving? That being said...my kids will probably get thier permit at 16 and thier license at 18 (not knockin your age though...you are an exception) I know how I was in my teens and i did a lot stupid stuff in my cars. not like the responsible stupid ya do when your older but truly stupid stuff like driftin on gravel roads at 70 miles an hour. Im thankful to be alive after that one.

I got a warning for that once. I thought for sure I was getting a ticket, lots of friends watching, heckling me in front of the cop. Got lucky though, learned my lesson.

Life, liberty and something about being happy.

I believe texting infringes on my right to life esp. when I drive a motorcycle.

I learned my lesson when the car went in the ditch and would have flipped if the pine trees hadnt abeen there. I also got smacked by a semi once. I stopped at the intersection and i wa sreally pissed off due to a situation at work and somehow I missed it. thought for sure it was clear and never saw him till he he the right front quarter panel on my HONDA CIVIC stupid tin can. again very thankful to be alive.

In general though people say im a good driver. I watch the cars way ahead of me. if the lead car brake sthen that means we all have to brake. i go ahead slow down a little instead of waitin for the car in front of me to slam on his brakes.

Driving is the #1 cause of auto accidents. Should we ban that, too?

I used to be a cable guy. One night we were working on an outage, along a pole line 20 or 30 feet off the road. We had traffic cones set up along the road (company requirement) we had two bright white GMC 3500 TopKicks, with 8 orange strobe lights on each, plus reflective tape all over them, plus all the regular lights on, and some idiot texting on her cell while driving (at night!) managed to jump the curb, plow down several cones, and hit the back end of the truck I was in. Rather exciting when you are 30 ft. in the air and your truck starts moving on its own. I have seen more accidents, and near accidents due to idiots who cannot put the phone down long enough to drive. While I don't really want government, at any level, getting any more involved in my life than they already are, I do think they need to throw the book at people who cause accidents because they are unwilling, or unable, to pay attention to the damn road.
