Well the power steering pump finally puked, it took long enough since this thread was finally started lol. All the noise it was making sounded like the trans mission b/c it came thru the floorboard right on the transmission hump, and it only made noise between 2K-3K for a while, then the noise shifted RPM Intervals, but could never be duplicated unless I was driving.
Anyhow the fluid was scorched, then my power steering started surging real bad and the pump started making a god aweful whine, then a screetch, and now a consistent combo of both noises plus a plethora of surging.
Anyhow, now that I know who the culprit is, is this a task I can take care of in my driveway after work or something I'll need to allocate some serious time too?
I see the PS pulley, but havent dove under to look at exactly how this job will go... anybody have feedback regarding the job, specialty tools other than pulley puller, etc? I'm putting on a substantial amount of miles and not exactly sure what worst case scenario is here if this unit completely fails.
The pump is easy to replace. I got a rebuilt one from the auto parts store and they had the option of one with a pully and one without (for less money of course) and I went with the one without but I had to put it in a backpack and run it to a local garage on my bicycle to press the pully. Wish I paid a few buck more for the complete one now.
Power steering went out and found that fluid appeared to have blown out of the side of the pump on what appeared to be a presure relief valve. Looks like a line connection point without the line. Is there a preasure relief valve on the side of the pump and can you order one? I cannot seem to find a parts breakdown or anything on the pump. The pump is on a 7.3 diesel in a 97 ford f series truck.
