microwave help

my almost 2 year old GE microwave blew it's magnetron tube, it is a $150 part and a $100 service call!
this thing was only about $300 new.
so I am looking for a replacement but would like something that might last oh say 5 to 10 years, it this too much to ask?
What brands are better?
p.s. it is an over the stove built in unit.
Bart

I was actually under the assumption GE was one of the better brands. If you feel up to it, replacing the magnetron is not too much of a job. Could probably get it down in 30 minutes your self.

How do you know it's the magnetron?

Just curious, there is a fuse inside microwaves that cost about $1.00 from radio shack.

I like Panasonic Microwaves. My sister has killed more kenmores than you could shake a stick at so I'd stay away from them.

everything works ie timer, turn table, light clock, exhaust fan, circulating fan, it just doesn't get hot.
from what I have read that only leaves the magnetron.

We have a GE and knock on wood, its been ok. We replaced a Kenmore with it because the kenmore's door handle kept cracking and the keypad wore holes thru it twice! There all made in China or korea or somewhere like that. Sharp and Panasonic make the best microwave. My folks had a Toshiba microwave when i was a kid and it was great untill my sister knocked it on thr floor, breaking it.

I bought a Sunbeam microwave from Wal Mart for $30. Several years later, it still works. Not very powerful though and it sees little use these days.

I got one for a buck from a yard sale at least 5 years ago. I could have had it for free because it was broken, but I was feeling generous. It turned out to be a blown thermal fuse, due to the seller adding an extra digit to the time when warming a muffin. I bypassed the fuse and it worked fine. It took a lot longer for the smell of burned muffin to go away.

If they're made in China, brand doesn't really matter. Maybe there's still some top quality restaurant-grade microwaves made in Taiwan or Korea?

I'm on my second GE microwave as the one that came with the "house" died after 10 years. It was an under cabinet mount.

If and when this newer GE unit fails....I won't buy another GE unit...or anything GE for that matter!

I don't care if GE were the best brand for the cheapest price,I wouldn't buy a GE product for reasons that will get this post sent to the club.
