Wow, fifteen years of loyal service, and now at only 40 yrs old, out of a job. The human resources person says I get paid till the end of today, and for the next two weeks, as compensation for not having any notice. At least no official notice. When the company I used to work for started building a new factory in another state with much lower labour costs, those of us who were awake new this would happen someday. I probably spent most of today looking at my alledged severance package, while trying to deciede what to do next. I did dream about retiring early, but not like this. It would have been nice to be able to save more first, I don't think my meager 401K is going to take me very far. :-( :-( I guess I don't have any excuse now not to look for a better job. DF

DF, I’m real sorry to hear about your layoff. If your company hires some young whippersnapper at half the rate to replace you, that’s age discrimination. You could sue them but it usually means relinquishing your severance package.
Fifteen years is nothing to sneeze at, you should get at least a letter of recommendation from your boss, ask for one. Maybe your HR department has an outplacement service for everyone affected by the downsizing. They should also help you with the options for your 401K package.
Again, am sorry to hear of your job loss. Good luck and I bet you’ll find something even better. How about a machine shop – FE’s only!
Barry, I have three references from work already, there is out placement service, and I am going back to see the HR people about my 401 plan later this week. But first I am going to call the machine shop where I have done part-time work and ask how busy are they? Frequently they let me do the FEs, because noone else wanted to work on the old dinosaur engines. Suited me just fine. DF
You might want to investigate the legality of your termination. I read an article about this awhile back and of course can't remember where (CRS) but companies of a certain size are required to give adequate notice or else offer 3 months(?) comp pay. Since the place I work is too small to qualify, I didn't pay much attention to it. Good luck!
I'm sorry to hear about your layoff. We've got telephone cable splicers down here in Ok from Ohio because of layoffs. Good luck. Your in our prayers. Bob Elliott
DF, Hate to hear your news, Keep your chin up, a man with your talent should put a set of headers and a big four barell on and be working again in a few days. ;-)
Good luck man.

Dinosaurfan, I was laid off once, and thought it was the worst thing that could ever happen to me. I got really down and felt useless. But I got into something I really liked doing, and now am self-employed, and have more work than time.
When I look back at that job I had, I wonder why I ever stayed as long as I did! There is a great deal of opportunity in our country for someone with a talent, and a willingness to work. Keep your head up, good luck. Greg58
DF! I changed careers at 42, never looked back. Best thing that happened to me. Get the book "What Color is Your Parachute" Maybe now is the time to move to L'Anse.

I am sorry to hear about your luck. Something is out there for you. Take some time to look for what you want so you can enjoy the rest of your working years. Good luck!
It's a shame so many companies are moving out of the US, especially just over the Mexican boarder. I live in an area where many businesses are going under, as well as some major places "downsizing". Makes everyone on edge! Best wishes on the job search, something will turn up.
