Yes, and you don't even have to remove the trans to do it. Just remove the tailshaft and you will see the plastic gear. I think there are just some snap rings holding it on the output shaft. When you do slide it off, watch out for the little ball that drives the gear.
Does anyone know if there's a way to replace the gear in the transmission that drives the gear on the speedometer cable. Yes, I do like my SROD enough to want to fix this if it's possible.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Jun-02 AT 00:23 AM (EST)]COOL!!! Thank you very much!!! You saved me from a fate worse then 10mpg in a 400!!! Much appreciated!!
The SROD is a fine transmission. Too bad there aren't enough people around who actually know anything about them. Unless you actually go to a driveline specialty shop. I am trying to replace bearings in mine and its been fun trying to get any information on this transmission. I need to find a shop manual or anything with an exploded diagram that shows how the transmission is assembled. I was transporting it today to get a bearing pulled off and some parts came out of place for the shift mechanism and I am not sure how and/or where they even go.
I have an '80 Ford factory manual that has all the diagrams and instructions for working on an SROD. If someone can tell me how to E-mail or post them I would be happy to. I'm just not very good with computers, I have a flat bed scanner but I don't know how to put the pictures here.
You're scanner should have come with software for editing photos as well as direct scanning to desktop, program file, etc. Use direct scan and save file under a name you will remember and a location that you will remember. In you're E-Mail screen you will have an add/send attachments option. Select it and you should have a browse option. Select it and use you're memory as to the location of the saved files. It's that easy!! I beleive you can also post said documents on this site in the tech section. Using the exact same methodology.
Thank you for your reply. This is exactly what I was looking for. Well kind of. I have been looking everywhere trying to find a ford power train factory manual and have turned up nothing. I am a big time do it your-selfer and generally have no problems with things like these. But the shift mechanism on this transmission is just plain retarded and lookes like it was added on after the transmission was designed and assembled. Then the engineers realized that they had forgotten something and thats why the shifter is mounted on the side of the tailshaft. I want this thing back together and in the truck so it is mobile again. If you could get that pic scanned and e-mail it to me that would be great. Otherwise I am going to bring the tranny into a shop this Friday and have them get the thing partially assembled for me. Or fully assembled depending on circumstances.

Tell me about not being able to obtain info on these trannys! I went to the Ford dealer yesterday and talked to a service advisor about what weight gear oil to run in it. They told me to run ATF in the Mitsubishi overdrive transmissions?????? I told him it was an SROD or T170. No clue, the mechanic had no clue either. So what is everyone running in theirs? I'm having troubles with 80W90. As the tranny heats up you get gear clash (AZ has been getting 100+ days lately) In the mornings while it is cool it works fine. I can't find any 75W80 to try either. Problems with 75W90 and synthetics of the same weight also. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Ron
PS What exactly was wrong with the speedo gear? My speedo was bouncing like crazy. Kind of like the gear was stripped or something. It turned out the cable was too long and binding.
The problem with the dealerships is that anyone who knew anything about the transmission is long gone. I found this out first hand talking to several sources. Nobody there works on anything like that anymore. They just replace it with a new or remanufactured unit. I have been going to transmission shops where the guys bleed 90 weight to find my information. We had a bunch of clatter going on in our SROD. Looks like the damn China mainshaft bearings that were in it went out. Everthing else looks good. I talked to one shop that said they would do an exchange for a New Process transmission with a few hundred bucks of course, but the new process wasn't overdrive. They did not say what kind but I assume it was a 435. They did tell me that it was a direct bolt in as well. I would much rather have the 435 but for what we use the truck for the overdrive works better. I already have one stump puller and I don't need another right now.
BTW, it looks like I got the linkage figured out. Its like a puzzle. Once I got the little cam looking peice out of the bottom of the transmission it all came together. Now all I have to do is get it all hooked back up and get the bearings tapped on.
Oh yeah, these transmssions should take 80w 90. But if your having troubles I think there is an 85w 140 or something in that range. You might also be having the same trouble we are having. I have learned that unless you are talking to an old man who has been working at the dealership since there was light or ordering Body parts, the dealership parts department is virtually worthless for anything.
Yeah buddy! That linkage inside was a royal pain. The SROD was my first rebuild of a tranny so I was scared as heck to begin with. Then when those pieces fell out...talk about crapping in your pants! Ford calls for straight 80W EP in the tranny. I got away with 80W90 until the heat cranked up. Yesterday I went to the motorcycle shop and picked up some synthetic 75W80 which is working fine so far. I need another 110 degree day to tell for sure.
Sorry I haven't replied sooner, I've been pulling tree stumps on my vacation and have been to tired to read my e-mail. I finally found a good use for that granny gear in my "68 F-100 with the 240 and NP435 it makes pulling stumps really easy! My sister is coming over on Sat. so she'll help me post the diagrams, hope they'll still be of use. It sounds like your almost done.
Inliner, Don't trouble yourself anymore than you have to. I think I got it figured out for the most part. The real test will be when I put it back into the truck.
Ooops, sorry Boss but I e-mailed you the diagrams anyway. Let me know if they came out or not so I know if we did it right. Hope your re-build worked out OK.
