water pump

Where is a good place to get a water pump, Ford, Napa, Autozone? How hard is it to change?

Here is one on eBay that still has two days to go on it. It is the genuine Motorcraft part for the 6.0 diesel. It is currently at $50. NEW Water Pump for FORD 6.0 diesel:eBay Motors (item 170334490688 end time May-26-09 18:16:12 PDT)

You have to be careful on these water pumps. The 2003 and 2004.25 model pump is different from later year models. The later year model pumps (improved design) are better and they will install on a 2003, but it requires some additional things.

The water pump in yours is smaller than a 2004.5 and up 6.0. To fix it properly so the impeller dosen't break again you should install the newer version. This requires you to change the front cover as well as the water pump. From what I have read, if you put another 03 water pump in it will just break later down the road.

Also - from what I have read ..............
To make everything easier just order all the parts for an 05'. You'll need an 05' front cover, water pump, low pressure oil pump cover gasket, front cover gasket, front crank seal (front cover gasket and crank seal should come with new cover, if not then front crank seal comes with front cover gasket), and an intake manifold gasket set. You can leave the intake manifold on and sneak the front cover out but it is probably better to remove it. When you remove the front cover be sure to use a plastic scraper on the bed plate seams, if the ends of the bed plate gasket come off with the front cover the truck will need bed plate gaskets down the road for sure. When installing the cover make sure the two dowels are installed or else the low pressure oil pump will not line up. It sounds worse than it is, it's a relatively easy job. The only thing to watch out for is the bed plate seam and the only special tool you'll need is a front crank seal installer (and possible a wear ring remover if the front crank seal has been replaced in the past)

To access the water pump pulley bolts on a 6.0, you'll need to remove the shroud. You CAN get it out w/o pulling the radiator.

Remove the upper radiator hoses (the large one and the smaller one going to the degas bottle), then pull up the deflector shield (the black plastic piece that has the a/c info on it and the belt routing, etc.). Remove the radiator upper brackets. You'll see the wiring harness that connects the batteries underneath that. Pull the three gray push pins that hold the harness onto the core support out so the harness is loose. Then remove the harness clips that hold the harness onto studs on either side of the shroud so it can be moved from behind the radiator. Pull the radiator away from the shroud, towards the front of the truck, with the harness out from between it and the core support. Remove the two shroud retaining bolts (8mm heads.) Then lift the shroud out, being careful not to break the little nipple off the radiator where the hose from the degas bottle attaches.

Having just replaced my head bolts with ARP studs, I would strongly suggest that you also do this. Beside removing the radiator like bismic said, I would remove the IC and the support brace that holds the IC and radiator in place. When that is done you only have the tranny cooler and AC condenser remaining. This makes removing the fan and fan shroud very easy. After the fan and shroud are removed you can stand right in front of the engine and change the water pump. Doing this made my head bolt job significantly easier. It only takes about 30 to 45 more minutes to remove the IC and support brace.
