U-Joints?
I have 96 F-150 4.9l w/ Mazda Transmission aand I have been hearing a noise coming from somewhere in the drive train that sounds like an unbalanced or wobbly rear tire but at a faster oscillation the the tire is rotating. I hear it especially during low speed accelerations and deccelerations in 1st and 2nd gear unless I mash the clutch then it disappears. I don't feel and vibration. I rotated the tires and had the balance checked but no change. I checked and refilled the differential fluid which was a quart low. The U-joints don't seem to have any play in them. I'm stumped!

U-Joints?
Sounds like 1 dusted U-joint bearing, the other 3 will make it feel tight but under strain it'll rumble or vibrate. There's other things that could do that, but I've seen a couple of these and usually found after working on half the drivtrain first. Good Luck....

Thanks for the advice! I am planning to pull the transmission and driveshaft out this week and inspect and replace anything questionable. I now notice that I have a fulltime bearing squeal from what sound like the front of the transmission,in all gears. I figured it is either the input or pilot bearing. I just replaced the clutchplate, slave cylinder and flexplate about 6 months ago. I might as well replace the U-joints while I have the driveshaft out rather than having to do them later.
