Hand choke ??

I have a 1972 F-250 4X4 HI-BOY that has (I have been told) a 390 with a big two-barrel carburetor.(this may or may not be O.E.M.)

On the right side of the carb is a round-shaped business that I assume is the automatic-choke.

Can anyone point me to pictorial instructions on converting this to manual choke ??

Can I simply remove some of this and connect a choke-cable to some lever, or will I need buy an engine-specific kit ??

Thanks.

I would imagine for the original carbs, you would need to locate the appropriate parts for the manual choke and swap them out ( or swap out the carb if it's not a simple parts change).

I have a 4 bbl on my 390 (1967 F-250 4x4) and when I bought my new Edelbrock carb, there were two two choose from, one that had electric choke and one that had the brackets and connections for manual...

its not a 390 they did not come in 4x4's the 360 did (i have a 360 and it is a good motor). for the carb if you want me too i can look at mine i have one that is manual and auto i can take pics of the manual for you so you can see the linkage.

btw: all 352 and 360 turned into 390 with the for sale sign. it's like magic.

Why do you want to convert to a manual choke? I have an automatic choke on my 2bbl carb on my 71 360 and it runs well. I did have trouble until I tuned it right and replaced the choke heat riser tube...that made the most difference in the choke's performance.

Thank you.

That looks like it should fit the bill.

I have no idea what the engine is; it definitely is Ford V-8; some guys were looking at it and they pretty much agreed it was a 390, but I don't know.

How do I identify just what it is ??

I just want to be able to start the thing (and it run) without having to squirt gas into the carburetor and start it, then die, then squirt gas, start, die again, etc. etc., for about fifty times until it decides to finally sit and run.

There is a good Cummins/5-speed boomed on the bed that is taking the place of the gas-burner as soon as I get time; I just need to be able to move the truck around from place to place without it being a half-a-day hassle.

Thanks.

the easy way to tell if it is an FE engine is look at where the intake and head meet if the intake goes under the valve cover it is an fe. after that if you want to know the displacement you will have to measure the stroke. pull a spark plug use a metal coat hanger or a similar item to measure the stroke. Someone else will probably chime in on the different stroke lengths i don't have them memorized.

Stroke: 352/360 = 3.50" / 390 = 3.78"

No 390's were factory installed in any 4WD.

All FE engines have 5 valve cover bolt holes per side.
