I am finally able to start working on the 9 inch rearend I bought for my 53. I am pulling the 3rd member out to check it out. Is there a secret on how to pull the axles? Is there an axle puller that needs to be used?
Remove the brake backing plates, and unbolt the 4 bolts that go into the axle flange. The axle should slide out then. Maybe a rubber mallet to pop loose the flange.
I had one that was stuck once. The trick is to put the drum back on in reverse with three of the lugnuts spaced apart but loose. You want the space for the drum to be able to slid back and forth on the lugs. You can then get some momentum as you pull the drum quickly toward you. It should pop right out. Good luck, Jag
When I pulled the axles out of the 64 I got....... some thumping with a mallet is an understatement 10lb slide hammer 2 guys taking turns and several wobbly pops each to get them to "pop"......... I guess they had never been out since 64 went right back in though, bearings were great seals don't leak....... just a little bit of rust and they were just use to being where they were I guess............
