I have a chance to buy an engine and transmission for a very good deal. However, they are in a 2WD truck, and I'm wanting them for a 4WD truck. Engine will be no problem, as the oilpan in the only real difference.
On the venerable C6 auto transmission, I'm pretty sure I would need to have a different tailhousing/adaptor, and the appropriate output shaft. I could "salvage" these from the tranmission in the truck now, most likely.
Will I need to dismantle the whole transmission to make this change? I have heard that on some transmissions (by some I mean other types, not some C6's), the work has to be done from inside, ie pulling the guts out of the tranny. If that is the case, it seems like it might be less of a great deal, but still better than the time and money to completely rebuild the pair in thier now.
Short version, what work will I have to do to take a 2wd C6 and put it in a 4wd with an NP203 t'case.
I have heard a lot of yes and no answers about this working aout correctly. It may be because I think some C6's use different tailshaft lengths. I think I'm about to find this out first hand today though. We're supposed to be pulling a C6 out of my freinds truck and seeing if we can swap the tailshaft housing for a transfer case adapter. I'm feeling a little negative on the swap going succecfully though. If it doesn't work I'm just going to take a whack at overhualing it. I let you know how it works out.
The 2WD C-6 has a C-clip that holds the output shaft in the transmission. (it prevents it from sliding out the back)It is deep inside the transmission. The 4WD versions don't need and don't have this clip on the output shaft.
