I am in the middle of installing factory power windows, locks and mirrors (a pain in the *** by the way) in my 96 F150 that came with all manual and im not sure how to fasten the lock actuator and the power window mechanism to the door. They were riveted from the factory so i figured I would nut and bolt them but it is almost impossible to do. What should I do? How much do rivet guns cost and what size would I need?
For the door lock motor, I tack welded a nut inside the swivel pad. You could also epoxy it in.
On the window mount, tack weld nuts to the base frame or use clip nuts with bolts.
An automotive supply store will have those captive(clip) nuts, cut the bolts off so they don't stick in beyond the nut. I riveted the lock actuator to the door and cut off the excess rivet with a dremmel. Have a look at these pics for more details. Power Windows - a set on Flickr
OK i bought the nut plates and have the window motors situated but now I realized that the speaker/door harness that connects under the dash only has 2 wires just for the speakers and a ground so Im going to the junkyard to grab the right one. I scraped the truck that I got all of the power parts from so im sol. I did take the dash out of the parts truck and the plug for the speakers/door harness seems to have more wires than the one under my dash so even after i grab the speaker harness I may not have everything I need
I did a power swap on my truck which is a bit older but very similar and had the same problem... you will need the power window/door lock harness... I got one from the wrecker and it ran across the top of the dash and plugged into a plug at the drivers kick panel. Instead of removing my dash to install it I ran it along the bottom.. I also had to install the breaker into my fuse box . Like I said my trucks a bit older but I would guess it's similar... if not the same.
I have the harness across the dash already installed but when I tried to use the windows they didnt work. I made sure it had all of the fuses in the fuse box and still nothing. The plug im referring to comes from the 2 plugs under the dash by the brake pedal and goes to the door. Mine only has the 2 wires for the speakers so it must not be getting any power to the windows/door locks/mirrors. This harness runs along the entire floor of the truck under the kick panels and behind the seat and connects to all of the speakers in the truck and the seatbelt warning light. Im going to the junkyard now so hopefully i get what i need.
I would check that you have the breaker in the fuse panel too... if I remember correctly I think a fuse wouldn't fit in the spot the breaker is supposed to go... do you have power to the new harness where it plugs in?
I checked the plugs coming from the dash and i had 2 constant hots and 1 keyed hot. I went to the junkyard and pulled the complete harness out of another truck and when I got home I realized that the plugs were different. So i disassembled the new harness and added the wires that I was missing to my original harness in the correct spots and everything works as it should.
Also I couldnt get a rivet gun at the time so I hot glued the nuts to the inside of the door lock actuators and bolted them up lol. Ghetto but it worked. I just have to tape up the harness and its ready to go.
Good to hear you got it sorted out.
Nothing ghetto about glueing in the nut. It just holds the nut inplace till the bolt is tightened up. The correct rivet to mount it requires an industrial strength rivet gun. Not many people have a gun like that.
