1970 F100 2WD 302, Ford rear end.
i have the drive shaft removed to change the universal joints. now when i spin a wheel it gets very hard to turn and the yoke will sit still then at a point everything moves easy then 200 degrees later it starts over again. is this normal for the ford rearends? if not what do I need to replace and who sells the parts?
Sounds to me like there could be a tooth broken on the ring gear. You need to pull the axles partially out and pull the carrier. Then you can see what is going on. If its broke you need to either go to a junkyard and get a different complete carrier or get new gears and install them. Make sure you know what gear ratio you have now.
Thanks,
I plan to pull it.
I have a spare 3rd member in my shed with 4.10:1's installed in it, this will be rebuilt and installed then I will rebuild the one in the truck now 3.89:1's then reinstall. this way i can keep driving. will also replace axle bearings and seals. figure while it's apart you should replace what you can.
Found a place that sells compete 3rd members for multiple style rear ends and multiple carriers (posi, lock ect) between 500 and 2500
