Typical Ford Transmission

Why do all Fords have that wierd shift from 1st to 2nd? My dad's paint vans always had that growing up and now I just bought an 09 F150 and they still do that. What's the deal?

I keep hearing clicking noises with mine, I think it's when the tranny shifts gears, happens mainly when the truck is cold just starting out. I noticed it now since it's warm out and I have the windows rolled down. anyone else hear clicking noises from underneath their truck?

Should get better with some miles. Mine did, anyway.

You talking about the drop in power between gears? It is to mush up the shift and make the transmision last longer by backing off engine power when it shifts. It is called torque modulation and is usually able to be turned off with a Diablosport Predator. I'm not sure when one will be available for the 09 though.

What you are referring to is the 6F series of transmissions. They are used in cars and crossovers. The 6 speeds in the trucks are different animals.

why would you want that? as posted previously its called torque modulation and it makes the transmission last longer. Why would people complain about a slight jumble or hesitation, its better than complaining about a blown up tranny. I dont get why anyone would want a tuner. If there was a safe way to squeeze extra horse power and smoother shifts out of this motor without jeprodizing reliability dont you think ford would of dont that? After all the only spend millions engineering a truck like this..

Ford also was concerned with a quiet comfortable ride when the engineered the truck, something that some people don't mind giving up for a few extra horses. The best modifications are the ones that increase the noise/ride harshness but don't harm the reliability of the vehicle. Some tranny tuners are made to still protect the vehicle but also provide firmer (read better) shifts.

Hard, firm, quick shifts are better for automatics. The problem is most people don't like that, so manufacturers make the shift slow and smooth. The problem with that is it cause severe slippage, which is no good for transmission life. With modern electronic throttle controls, the computer actually closes the throttle - sometimes quite a bit at times during the shift. The result is slow mushy shifts - possibly even a manual transmission like feel as the computer opens the throttle back up.

Tuners can get rid of the torque management, and force the transmission to firm up the shifts - resulting in better tranny life, slightly faster truck, but at the expense of a less comfortable. The 1-2 shift is usually the biggest difference in RPM, and is the most noticeable.

Ford overbuilds everything they make

big time. When I Supercharged my 2006 F-150, I added +112 HP/TQ. Roush gave me a Warranty that covered my entire powertrain for the remainder of my 3yr/36k Ford Bumper/Bumper warranty.

Roush did/does that because of the testing they've done with the 04+ F-150...and I hope the 09+ F-150 soon. They found that the Motor/Tranny/Axles could easily handle 500 crank HP without any issue. I know of guys running blowers like mine for 50,000 + miles without any issues

BTW, 1 or 2 people above are quite wrong on what makes a transmission last longer...Lead Head beat me to it
a soft, longer shift will actually shorten the life of a transmission
but, it appeases the majority of drivers who want a smooth ride, and don't want to feel any bumps
on the other hand, a hard jarring shift shortens tranny life as well...there is a fine medium that you have to find. This usually gives you a very firm shift, and the duration of the shift is minimized to the max extent possibe
this splits the roughness, and the life span of the friction clutches out

I do like the Torque Reduction feature slightly...but like the RSC, I feel it should be a tool for the Driver...not a forced safety feature (which isn't all that safe IMO)
