I am going back tonight to look at a 2004 E.B. 4x4 Expy. I drove it last night and have been going through old threads all day today to get an idea what I may be getting into. However, I am hoping you all can help me get a list of things that are peculiar with an Expy and what I should be looking for. I have already managed to find out that the ball joints are going bad and the rotors are warped. Is there anything else? It does not have the nav system, or a dvd - I have read that both are problematic. What other issues do these things have?
This will be my wife's dd. We have been shopping for an excursion for months, but the few we have found and been happy with were sold out from underneath us since they were so far away (working deals with phones and pictures sucks). She likes this Expy and it is really clean with just under 70K on the 5.4L.
If all goes well, I will sign papers tonight and drive it home to her.
what's the ticket on the truck? if it's a good deal i say go for it, but if it's average price i'd recommend holding out for a 2005 or newer (3V).
fwiw, i shopped around for a 2005 EB without sunroof, heated/cooled seats, dvd, backup sensors and navi. all of those items seem to be problematic. my boss has a 2003 and his sunroof leaks into the headliner, backup sensors work sporadically, cooled seats don't work at all and dvd player screen doesn't come on (sound only).
i LOVE my truck btw. 2005 estate green EB. good luck!
The sticker price was $11,895. When I sat down with the salesman he started quoting me at 11995 + 695 for a reconditioning fee + 500 for a "finance incentive". The finance incentive is a $500 fee for not letting them find financing for you (in which the bank pays them a "finders fee" for the contract). In other words, paying cash (or using your own bank for pre-approved financing) will cost you $500!!!!
They would not come down at all on the price at all. Even though the tires had 25% or less tread left, and the issues with the brakes and ball joints.
So basically, we sit down and he says "OK, for $13190 plus T/T/L you can drive her home". We haggled a good bit with his sales mgr involved. The best they would do was come down $250 on the "finance fine".
I offered $12K with new tires. They said No. Then I walked away and had dinner. $13K is right at the high retail NADA value, but I had a pretty sour taste in my mouth anyway.
I looked for a few weeks and found most 04 EB,s were in the $13,9xx-$15,9xx range. The lower price seemed miles were in the 80k+ miles. We bought an 04,loaded except nav.69k miles, dealer put a 2yr 30k mile powertrain warranty. $14,995 was asking and we had a trade in.Took a a couple of days but got to where we needed to be.Be patient, which I am not..they will call you back if they want to sell or just look around. They are out there. Where are you located?
I am between Baltimore and D.C. (If God were to give the world an enema, he would put it here).
I figure they might call. The expy has only been on their lot for a couple days, so they probably want to take their chances on getting more for it. They paid wholesale for it (admitted it the night before while test driving it), so I figure they probably have somewhere around 9500 or so in it, maybe a bit more. I dont mind a dealership being firm on a price or trying to maximize their profits, but this place is pretty shady in the way that they price and sell cars.
There are lots of Expy's out there. Maybe we will even find an excursion.
Cracked leather on rear seat surfaces ...
Hissing noise from under driver side dash (bad brake booster) ...
Operation of rear HVAC air damper (no clicking or thumping) ...
Power seat memory / driver seat slides back when key removed ....
Brake dusting / rotor warping .....
Rear differential whining / pulsing ....
i have exactly the truck your looking for. i just bought it $12500 +TTL. 04 expy EB 5.4 towing package, everything but navigation. the issues i have are the reverse sensors dont work at all, the heated/cooled seats dont work at all, rear wiper dosnt work it makes noise but dosnt move (stripped motor gear). thats all wrong with my truck. its all stuff that i can deal with because the expy is really nice. 83k on it and it looks showroom inside and out. it is by far the nicest vehicle i have owned, and it rides amazing on the highway. dvd works fine, 6 disc changer works fine. mostly everything is awesome about the truck.
if your buying from a dealership i would try to get them to change the tires if it has the continental tires on it still. they last a really long time but they are crap as far as traction goes. and dont settle for the sticker price you can always cut a deal on the price. that place just didnt want to make a sale that day.
Well, we ended up getting an 08 Eddie Bauer EL. My wife absolutely fell in love with it, even though it was more than we originally wanted to spend. I still think we got a good deal. It has 38K miles, DVD, and all the other EB goodies (except sunroof) and a 100K mile bumper to bumper warranty. We paid a total of 28300.00 for it. I am pretty pleased with the deal. It is not an Excursion, but as close as we could get without buying something with tons of miles.
I guess now I will be spending more time in this forum too.
congrats on the new expy!
just curious, how much longer is the EL than the standard expy?
It has a bit more leg room between the 2nd and 3rd rows, and several feet of cargo space behind the 3rd row. I dont have exact numbers. It is comparable in floor/cargo space to an Excursion, and has a little more room than a Suburban.
It has rained non-stop here since we brought it home. I will try to get pics when it clears up.
