Hello all...I usually post on the 48-60 board, but I have a line on a 72 Ford F100 Explorer long bed 302 3 speed that's been sitting inside for a number of years. The former owner was a bit of a pack rat so I wasn't able to thoroughly look the truck over with all the junk in the way, but it seems very solid with the exception of some rot above the trim midway up the bed sides. Is this a common place for rot to occur?
Yes, It is a common spot due to the split of the sheet metal I am currently wanting to try out a rust eating chemical(don't know of a brand yet) and then use some seam sealer sold by Eastwood to see if this will stop it from spreading. The cab is also a common area The front supports under the floor board and the back corners as well as the kick panel areas where it meets the floorboard.
yeah, I've been brainstorming a few ways as to how I'd fix that. I guess I'd grind the seam out until I hit enough of an area where there was no more rust and see how the factory filled the seam. I'd probably weld in a piece or fill the seam with body caulking. Hard to tell having only looked at it once.
The Explorers are a special limited edition trim and option group, so yes they are rarer than the normal production run. They were only made a few months out of the year and had their own seprate brochure.
I have a gallery about each year Explorer you can see here...
