not the answers i was looking for...i know from owning a half doz fox body mustangs. i could increase hp my removing smog pump.
removing airbox silencer
redirect the water hose on the throttlebody spacer
doesn't cost anything for these... anything similar for our 5.4 trucks?
Sorry about the sarcasm, think everyone was just reiterating that adding HP = $$$$. Well back in the last century, I had a 76 SD 455 TransAm that had twin smog pumps. After accumulating enuf pulleys and brackets and plugs for the 3 miles or so of useless (I thought) vacuum lines, I removed both, bypassed the cat, rejetted the carb and advanced the timing about 2 degrees if my memory serves me well. My guess was about 75 FREE horsepower or at least it felt like it. That car would smoke thru 1st, patch second and chirp third with the TH400.
Forward to the 21st century. No more crude smog pumps and a very sophisticated pollution control system well integrated into the electronics and mechanicals. The 5.4 is a great motor IMHO but it can seem sluggish particularly in a nearly 4 ton vehicle. If you'll read through these forums, seems like the best gains in hp for that motor come from the addition of custom tunes, regearing and a less restrictive cat back exhaust; none of which are free. Oh, and for about 7 large, theres a couple of Saleen or Roush superchargers that should pin you in your seat. They're made specifically for the F150 but should bolt up to your SD as well although your retune would have to be suited to the SD.
