im the fresh meat of the day so get the beatings out the way please (ha ha) ive got a 90 f150 that my motor blew in so ive got to swap it my problem is the engine is out of a 86 mustang a the tranny i want to use is out of a 89 f250 the 5 speed with od will i be able to bolt them together with no problems or would it be too much trouble to mess with thankx
im going from a 4.9 with a e4od to a 302 out of a 86 mustang the tranny is out of a f250 with a 351w and the 5 speed i want to use also will the 351 mount plates work with the 302
Once upon a time when swapping out a 300 for a 302, I wanted to continue using my 3 sp manual. I had a hard time locating a proper 302 flywheel. I eventually found one from a Mustang. Turned out that I had a big problem with it. Car flywheels were smaller around than the truck flywheels. With the truck bellhousing I had, the starter wasn't going to be close to the ring gear. I eventually went to converting to a C6 automatic. When looking for the right flywheel/ringgear, make sure you have the proper diameter for your truck bellhousing. Also remember that there is a significant difference between pre 82 302's and 5.0L post 82(ish?) 302s. The balance weighting is completely different which is important, because 302/5.0s are externally balanced. So in a nutshell, make sure you have a Truck diameter flywheel with the proper 5.0L counterweighting. Also remember that the 6 cylinder radiator has hose inlet/outlets on opposite corners than the V8 radiator. Unless you want to do some funky radiator hose custom routing, you'll probably want to acquire a v8 radiator.
BTW,
The bellhousing pattern is shared between 300, 302 and 351W, if both trucks are the same bed length (Longbed to longbed...or shortbed to shortbed) and the engine/tranny is located in the same position as your 300, then you probably can use the driveline that came with the F 250... problems there might be. different U joint yoke sizes. Different engine perches for 300 vs 302. In 70s era trucks, the engine perches between 300 and 302 were significantly different. The frame had holes for all perch varieties, just a matter of finding the correct perches. I imagine that the same is probably true for your 90. Drivelines can be altered fairly easily
the 302 im gonna use is sitting in a 85 4x4 in my front yard so im guessing hes taken care of that problem id use the 4x4 but i would have to do a lot of work on it ta get it runnin its been rednecked to he!! and back long term project i guess the only reason im doing the swap is my 300 went to the big juckyard in the sky thankz for the reply
The mustang 5.0 and F250 5-speed will bolt together, you just need a 50oz 164 tooth flywheel to go between them, the 5.8 flywheel is 28oz so you can't use it. The 5.0 and 5.8 use the same engine mounts, but the I6 and small V8 frame towers are different so you'll have to grind off the rivots and move these from the donor truck. There will be lots of other issues including wiring if you plan to keep it EFI, but nothig that can't be conquered.
i figure the previous owner changed the flywheel if not its no problem i work at a parts store the only thing on the electrical is the alt its got a carb on it im going to use a hei distributor i should have everything i need so no worries
