Picked up a few bottles of the cetane booster from my Ford dealer and didn't realize until I got home it was the old stuff with the sticker saying NOT for new ULSD ... why would they even still sell that stuff??? Remember right after getting my early job 1 truck 2 years ago I had to make sure it was the ULSD product. Didn't look that closely this time as I figured they wouldn't even have the old stuff anymore...
Just return it and tell them that it's not compatable with your new truck. Maybe they have a case of new stuff in the back and there trying to unload the old stuff first
Traded the old stuff in today for the "new formula" bottle, looks just the old one except the label says ULSD compatable. The parts guy said this is the only stuff they'll sell once the old stuff is gone...
I use DieselKleen from Power Service for my fuel supplement. I have been told the Ford product is exactly the same stuff made by this Power Service. I know I don't regen too much and get about the same mileage I did with both of my 7.3's, except when pulling hills with a trailer. Then the mileage drops like a rock, but it also goes up the hills with a lot more power than either of the 7.3's. I run this supplement in my caterpillar engines as well as my 6.4. The mileage improvement pays for the supplement. I get it at the local International Truck dealer in large bottles for half the cost of the Ford porduct at the Ford dealer.

You'll be able to tell this is a newbe question but how to you measure and pour the dieselkleen, or whatever additive you use, into the tank when you are at the pump? I'm sure there is an easy way but I sure haven't figured how to perform this task very easily. Thanks y'all.
does the cetane boost improve MPG? does it lesson the number of times the 6.4L 'cleans the dpf'?
Cetane has nothing to do with MPGs or the DPF.
Cetane is the opposite of octane, it is a measure of the fuel's ability to ignite. The higher the cetane, the easier the fuel ignites. Commercially available diesel fuel should have a cetane number of at least 40, and all modern trucks are designed to run just fine at 40.
Increasing cetane might make the truck easier to start, particularly in cold weather as the fuel ignites more easily.
Diesel engines are already about 98% efficient. If your truck is tuned and running correctly, there is no fuel additive that will make any appreciable difference in fuel economy.

Would the additive help prevent any type of injector failure? I've heard and seen this happen more often than I would like to see and it sure is expensive when you are having to change out injectors....at least that is what I've heard.

I think that you will find that a matter of debate.
Some additives have extra fuel lube and detergents. Many say they help.
Others will tell you that ULSD is plenty slippery.
Me? I really do not know. My 06 was not built for ULSD.
I do not figure that a little extra lube can hurt. And I also figure you cannot go wrong with a little extra detergent either. So I use DieselKleen, but I am not religious about it. If I run out during a trip, I don't worry about it. And I generally do not bother when I run the very few miles that I do not pulling my trailer.

yeah...it's a PITA pouring it in. I took a piece of paper, and using the marks on the side of the bottle, put "tick" marks at 1 ounce intervals. If I'm at half a tank (which is around 19 gallons), I "try" to put in 3 ounces, by using the tick marks on the paper, and measuring from the level of the stuff down three marks, and marking it with a Sharpie. If I'm at 1/4 tank, I try to put 4 ounces. I NEVER get it exact, as pouring from the bottle you always get a little more or a little less than where your mark is. So, if anyone has a better way, I'd like to know too!!
Also, using the Ford stuff "seems" to increase the distance between regens a little. I ran out a few weeks back, and ran two tanks without it. Regened every 200 miles, instead of the nearly 300 I was getting when I used the additive. Get maybe half a MPG better fuel economy, but maybe it't all in my head (there's not alot of other tings in there). But the main reason I use it, is I was told it would help increase the engine's life, as I was also told ULSD is LESS slippery than LSD....
Also, I guess I better check the stuff I bought a week or so ago and make sure it's the new stuff....
I have been using the Cetane Boost from Ford. I kept several empty bottles and refill them up to the 4 oz mark. That should be enough for a full tank of new fuel. Then I just pour the whole 4 ozs in. Yeah, sometimes I'm only taking on 3/4 tank, but I don't worry about a little extra cetane.
Ford says these new 6.4's need 45 cetane diesel to run proper, so that's why I use Diesel Kleen. Plus the added lubrication. And believe it or not, I definitely can tell the difference when I do use it and don't. The truck seems to just run better and have more power.
I use that DK sometimes, usually when I tank it up at a station other than Shell. My truck seems to regen less with Shell in it. I don't see a marked improvement in MPG.
That said, on a 125 mile trip, no wind to speak of, rolling hills, 5000 to 6000 feet of elevation, I got an insane 20 MPG per the lie-o-meter which seems pretty comparable to hand calculations the times I compared them. Usually on the highway, I am getting about 16.5 to 17.0 running at about 1950 rpm or 69 mph.
Used Flying J fuel and no Diesel Kleen (didn't have any and didn't want to spend the 10.00 on a 16 oz container...kind of defeats the purpose of increasing mileage if you ask me).
Truck is crowding the 17000 mile mark ('08 Job 1).
