Thanks Nep! I wish I had gotten to you sooner! I spent all day Saturday working on her in hopes to get her fixed....I knew she needed a tune up so I replaced the plugs and wires, but then I made a rookie mistake....I listened to the dealership and bought a map sensor and tps sensor...No luck...I was wondering if it could be the pumps I just found out is has a high and 2 lows...over $200 bones not cheap...any help will be so appreciated...when she gets warm she doesn't backfire as much through the intake now and idles smoother but I assume that is from the plugs and wires. I do not want to nickle and dime myself to death as you understand...Thanks again for the help. Do you know how much a computer is?
getting a new computer will cost quite a bit but if you can find a donor truck with the same engine/trans as you, it shouldn't cost too much. I was actually attempting to fix your fuel gauge problem. I don't think your fuel pump is bad, i think the sending unit is sending the wrong signals to your fuel gauge, or that there is a wiring issue somewhere along the line. The computer is possible, but again I'd ask subford. He has all the proper documentation.
I paid $231 for my new PCM, but that ended up not being the problem. I'm having the exact same problem you are and I've thrown everything but the kitchen sink at it(that comes next). Mine is a 95 f-150 302, Subford knows his stuff though.
I would be lying if I said that I wasn't frustrated with both the fuel guage problem and the back firing I hope that subford reads this I don't want to be throwing money at problems that have no solutions. Maybe I'll have to try the kitchen sink if it works for you
I think my problem is either my voltage regulator sending to much power to the TPS and not enough to the MAF. Also, the air diverter valve, I know with yours being an 89 you have a MAP sensor on yours. I've heard a bad MAP sensor can cause symptoms like yours so that may be something to research.
Yeah that is what I was told...I already changed the MAF and the TPS and did a full tune up...I bought a fuel regulator but did not put it on as I had already been working on it for several hours. I was thinking maybe it was a bad fuel pump or something but once it warms up it doesn't do it as much. See I cannot even use the front tank (backstory from the previous owner my uncle said that someone tried to syphon gas from the front tank and jammed something up in it and it wont take fuel now.. I pulled off the filler neck that connects to the rubber tank hose and it was clear....I guess I am going to have to drop that tank but when I put it on the front tank it reads way past full but then when I filled up the back tank the guage reads empty...fuel pump maybe? I am not sure I am trying to drill it down but no luck yet...I just do not want to spend a ton of money on things that wont fix it.
I am so thankful that I found you all because maybe then I will have an idea where to go next..
Subford told me that if there is no fuel in you vac line for the fuel pressure regulator(FPR) that it is still good. If there's fuel in the vac line when you take it off , it's bad.
no fuel in the vac line so I guess that is ok then so I will not change that part....Did your truck die a few times when you start it then run better once warmed up?
If i try and drive it cold it tries to die and just back fires really bad and doesn't seem to have any power...I am not sure if my 2 problems are related or not.
No, my truck doesn't die at all, but it does bogg down and sometimes backfire through the intake on light pedal when it's warmed up . When I floor it, it goes when it's cold it does okay I just can't drive it very far because the cat gets to hot and i'm afraid it may catch on fire.
No sure about the timing Bren but the truck idles smoothly and doesn't lag when starting and she doesn't smoke black or anything when running or rev'd up...someone told me could be the distrubter but it is not that old either.
