Yesterday I took my boat an hour and a half south for routine maintenance and noticed while on I-95 that the truck seemed to not have the power it normally does and contributed it to the very strong headwind that we had and didn't think much of it. After dropping the boat off at the dealership and about three or four miles down the road the engine silhouette warning light came on so the wife looked through the manual and determined from the manual that the particular light wasn't an engine malfunction light but an emission or something as simple as the fuel tank cap not being tight, I stopped and looked through the engine compartment and didn't see anything unusual, the book also stated to check the engine compartment and re tighten the fuel cap and let the truck sit for 8 hours and check the light again.
This morning I did a very thorough check and found the rubber hose that is connected between the metal turbo inlet tube and the inter-cooler shroud had a 2" slit where the metal tube meets the rubber hose at the radiator hose clamp ... I didn't find the proper hose today and will order one from the Ford dealer in the morning. I'm not driving the truck until I replace the nose but my question is, was the warning light due to the slit in the turbo inlet hose and how much will a slit like that affect the performance of the truck? Like whenever I was towing the boat.
I'm thinking it shouldn't have been too much of an effect unless the hose was collapsing due to the turbo vacuum and acting as a 'shutoff' valve for the air going to the turbo?

i don't understand which connection you're talking about..was it a blue hose like this?
if so, these boots are all under positive pressure and I noticed a power loss while towing with the damaged boot..the boots degrade with the oil introduced into the induction system by the CCV system..
That's exactly what I am referring to, the blue boot and it has a slit just like what is shown in your picture. Will that slit cause the engine light to come on?
yes it can...the PCM may think the turbo is underboosting based on MAF and MAP.. get a new boot on there and you should be fine..
so you know, if the bad boot was on the passeger side, it's called a hot side CAC boot..this is the most common IC boot that fails..it gets the oil and higher temps..drivers side is cold side CAC boot..
Should be under the emissions warranty i would think. Or you could make Ford "eat crow" by stating that yall (Ford) state that you will warranty anything that touches oil for 100k miles. Thanks to the CCV, the rubber boots have oil all over them!
Yah, but the 100 bucks will also cover the labor. your poison, take your pick. If you let the warranty cover it and 3 months from now it has prob. u r covered free. If u do it and the samething happens then u pay again. DO U FEEL LUCKY?
I chose to do it myself...It takes no time..AFAIC, the less someone else is working on my truck, the better..Be careful not to overtighten the clamp Stevie Ray..
Thanks all, it's raining now and the weatherman is calling for a 90% chance of rain for the remainder of the day so my work day is shot. I've already called the dealer and they do have the part in stock so if their service dept. doesn't look backed up I'll have them replace the boot and if it looks like a long wait I'll pick up the part and install it myself ... either way, it's looks to be an EZPZ remove and replace item.
I'll make sure to not over tighten the clamp William, thanks!
