Using Low Gear

75k trans. is being overhauled after going out on a long down hill grade using low/first gear while pulling a 6000 lbs. trailer. Is there a known weakness in these tranys doing this? It was a 45 degree day. Had made the ten mile climb and let truck idle for 5-10 min. for descending. Trans. has been serviced at least twice maybe three times up to this point (once with a filter) with synthetic. Owned since new.

Doesn't sound like a "normal" problem, however, was it really necessary to go down in 1st gear? You didn't say how steep it was, but for you to HAVE TO use 1st the whole way, and for how long?? that may have been the culprit, probably fried your clutches in the tq converter. A tranny will usually go between 150 and 200k mile behind a stock diesel. Even more if you baby it and don't tow heavy.

Trans Go Tugger kit will fix that.

It's a common problem on a stock tranny.

I can't remember if the factory trans locks the converter above a certain speed for manual 1. I know manual 2 locks at 30-35 on my truck, but 1 never does, unless I force it to. If the converter was unlocked the whole descent, I'd imagine the fluid temp would get pretty hot and cause problems.
