[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Jul-02 AT 08:27 AM (EST)] stock 90 Bronco...I attempted to suck out the oil out of the fill hole with a suction gun but there is not enough room for the tube due to the gears...Is there something I am doing wrong? or due I need to remove the cover to drain? If I remove the cover, does it have a gasket or just sealer? I want to have everything on hand before I take the cover off...Thanks for any help.
Where I work part time we have a very small diameter hose to do what you are trying. It is better than not changing the fluid but I would remove the cover. It is very easy and you won't get all the metal shavings out with a suction gun. The cover will have a gasket and I would use a new gasket to put the cover back on. Some people use gasket maker but I have found the real thing works better. The whole process should take less than 30 minutes.

This is a timely topic. I have a '73 F100 and it doesn't have an rear cover. How can I do a good job of changing the oil without totally removing the 3rd member?
Pete, the 9" diff can hold 3 to 5 qts of oil depending on housing type, if yours has a posi, be sure to put in the posi additive and refill with 85-140wt gear oil.
Jim, to do a decent job of draining the diff, you can remove the pinion support, it is held in with 5 bolts, driveshaft needs to be removed from yoke, remove bolts, gently tap the backside of the yoke, you will see the pinion support seperate from the 3rd member, there will be a depth shim behind the pinion support, don't lose it. Also there is an o-ring that seals the pinion support to the 3rd member, that needs to be replaced. Most of the oil will drain out, what is left, you can use a rag to wick it out. When you go to put it back together, the pinion support only goes in one way, the bolt pattern that is, be careful not to force the support back in, there is a pilot bearing midway in the case that the pinion needs to slide into(straight). This method will work, of course pulling the 3rd member is the best method.
