Hey i have just gotten a 1989 f250 4x4. the truck has had a motor put in it probly about 20k miles ago, but it seems alittle sluggish on the acceleration and ability to maintain speed in high gear when going up a hill. and according to the owner (who i trust) it has done this since the day he bought it and before the new motor was put into the truck. my question is what gear ratio's were an option when this truck was bought new, and for alittle back ground information the truck has a full floating dana60 in the rear and a ttb dana50 w/ leaf springs in the front. also can i tell what gear ratio is in the axle by looking at the axle tag?
thanks
lr
I'm not sure which ratios were offered but yes you can look at the tag to see what you've got. On the tag you should see something like 3 55, or 4 10, etc. You could also check the label on the door jam, see what the axle code is and then look at the decoder chart on this website on the Tech Articles page.

That is a very heavy truck and if it has the 351 or god forbid a 302 instead of the 460, then no matter what gears you have it will be a dog. 4.10's will help but if you have the 3.50's with a 302 then you should look into getting new gears.
thanks for the information. it'll greatly help when i have time to look at the tag. and for the performance the 351 does pretty good since i don't tow anything real heavy. but i do have far off future plans for a diesel conversion.
thanks
