I was at the junkyard today and found a few tailgates (my truck came without one). The only problem is that they were on 1987 and newer trucks. My question is, will they fit a 1986 one, or do I need to look for a 1980 to 1986 tailgate?
I'll bet they don't. Others (sycostang?) will know more for certain but I'll bet there are
some changes to the latching mechanism(s) that need to be made, and I think some of
the body lines won't line up perfectly (but would maybe still be acceptable, it's up to
personal taste).
It sure did. Thank you. Might I make a suggestion; the one in the tech tips gets replaced with the one that works? I do not want to sound like a pain, but it will help us new folks, and might keep other people from being bothered with these menial questions.
i know that they dont, i have an 86 F150 with a newer tailgate. i had to buy the newer hinge pieces and relocate my latches. for the latches you hook up the tailgate, then put it up like you were gonna close it and mark where the latch bolts go. then drill a new hole, and reach up through the tail-light hole to hold the nut (make sure you put a large washer on the back so it wont rip the metal over a period of time). then you should be good to go! if ou need parts go to LMCTruck.com. if you have any other questions, feel free to ask!
