Does anyone know how many spline the output shaft is on a C6 in a 78 Bronco with a C6 versus a C6 from a 460 in a 77 Mercury Grand Marquis? Or just the spline count on either? I have an opportunity to buy a 460, C6 and 9 inch with rear discs in a 77 Mercury Grand Marquis but I want to make sure the C6 will swap in. Any tips or pointers??? Thank you.
C-6's all have 31-spline output shafts. There is a difference between 2wd and 4wd C-6's the difference is the output shaft length. There is also a physical size difference in C-6 trannies , there are 3 types. C-6 FE (for the older FE Engines 352,360,390,406,410,428), C-6 Small block (289,302,351W) C-6 Big block (351M,370,400, 429, 460). Also remember that there are different C-6 torque converters depending on the engine they are being bolted up to.
So in order to swap the C-6 in you will have to do what I did. I had a C-6 4wd from my 351W powered 84 bronco, and I took the '69 Tbird C-6 2wd that came with my 429 and brought them both to the shop. In order to swap the output shafts you have to completely remove the "GUTS" of the tranny.. so I had my C-6 built up with the AOD 1st/2nd gear set while he was in there
Also that 9" rear is most likely one with 28-spline axles, unlike the 31-spline 9" that were put into Broncos up until 1986 or so.
