I was thinking of rebuilding a 368 Y-block, but I got to thinking maybe someone on here would have a better option or idea. I had planned on hooking it up to a modern transmission, going to cost a pretty penny I'm sure in just the adapter alone. But just spit balling here.
I'd like to stick with a Y-block, doesn't seem right to switch out such a cool sounding engine. I'm still researching it, I only stumbled upon it last night, but it looks like they made HEMI parts for the flatheads at one point, did they ever do this for Y-blocks? I know Ford made the 427, but I can't imagine that not being a crazy expensive engine... not to mention if I had one it be in my Mustang
I am keeping, and having rebuilt, the 292 y-block from my '59 F250.The man doing the work is Tim McMaster, whom I met on the other site. You can check out his personal website that contains links to U-Tube videos of the work and processes he does when rebuilding these great old motors. There's no doubt I made the right choices to both keep the original engine,as well as choosing the best man for the job.Plus,he's one of the nicest most accommodating people I've met, helping me make decisions from where I'm working over here in Iraq. You should check out his site:yblockguy.com.Good luck,Steve
Thanks, yeah I agree, for this truck it has to be a Y-Block. If it was my car, I'd put anything in there, but this thing needs a y-block, I just wish it had more than a 272!
The 272 will work fine for a while, but I'd like to build a bigger Y-block in the mean time, thats why I was thinking the Lincoln blocks, but to be truthful I don't know what kind of parts are out there or aftermarket performance either. No point in having an engine I can't fix.

You're probably better off with a Ford Y-block......I think it might be harder to find parts for the Stinkon Linkons!
well if your gunna have one rebuilt in sheridan go talk to Top End Engine Machining up in the industrial park. the guy that runs it has been introduced to many as a walking talking ford parts book and he is good at wat he does. That and i guess he had a 56 ford with a 312 and triple dueces when he was in high school so he should know a good deal about the good ole motors.

the 368 is a pretty good engine but its weak point is the oil pump drive shaft which breaks periodically. the 57 lincoln had 10 to 1 compression and 56 had 9 to1. Truck engines had a steel crank others were cast. 57 had a better carb and distributor but carb had vacuum operated secondaries which tend to stick open. Wilcap in Pismo beach makes an adapter for this engine to the chev auto overdrives(about $750 with starter). dont know of any speed equipment for the 368. Astronomically rare is a dual 4 manifold used on turnpike cruisers. the 57 was rated at 300hp so it should be reasonable adequate. parts are available for it: see ebay and lincoln club and hemmings. Look at the info on oiling problems with y blks . I never had problems with my lincoln 368s. NO parts interchange with other y blks inc gaskets. dont buy parts for the other eng's they wont work. get 56 lin shop manual (see ebay). good luck
+1 on the advice to go with a Ford Y-block, either a 292 or 312. You've have much better luck finding parts and support. They are much more common engines than the Lincoln Y's. And they sound like nothing else.
I had some oiling issues with my big 56.....and it is something for you to look into. I actually like my 223 better than my 5 yblocks. If your truck came with the yblock...then use it and some of the power upgrades from Mummert and the others can be used if you will need more power.
I actually think my 223 will run and pull side by side the 272 and 292s I have.
I think the 312 might be the way to go. The problem is I can't find one, least around here. Closest I've found is a 292, but I'd rather go with the larger 312. lol always something when you're so picky...

thanks guys
Here's a good article on the Y-Block and why the 292 may be a better choice than the 312:
I would really like to stay with a Y-block, and even though things like a 351w have an easy draw to them, I think the truck would loose some character without a Y-block. Funny how we want to keep things one way and yet I want to make it a 4x4, lol...
Ok, so anyone have any solid information or links for performance parts?
I would go nuts to look under my hood and see one of these looking back at me:
What I want: a solid engine thats running around 300hp. I guess torque is more important in this. The truck is planned to be used as a daily driver, even in teh winter (thus my 4x4 need), but it will also be hauling some weight in its life. I'll probably keep the 5 speed transmission I have now, but I may upgrade that to a newer tranny.
I'll be honest, I'll put on the newb hat that wants something and has to make it difficult, but I really want to have a Y-block, I'm sold on it. Any build suggestions? Parts to consider? best brands, worst parts brands?
I am trying to install a 1957 Y-block 4V intake on my 1955 272 Y-block. I have tried 2 different manifolds and each one "rocks" on the valley pan, thus not fitting flush on the head. Would the valley pan be different between a 55 272 & a 57 312 engine? Help!
