1986 f150 with issues

New to this section of the forum (usually in the older truck area 1951 f-1).....But I have a question. I am looking at buying a 1986 F150 (virtually rust free) at a real good deal. The problem is that the guy says it has an electical problem. He said he hauled some stone and drove the truck to work. The next morning he went to start it and had nothing. It was like it had no battery. He tried another battery, changed selinoids (sp) and cannot figure it out.

I am thinking that the problem is a bad ignition switch what do you guys think?

Ok let me elaborate a lil bit ...the guy said that when he turned the key he got nothing. It was fine the day before but now nothing. No clicks nothing. He did change the selinoid and the starter. Still nothing. He said none of the aux came on when he turned the key as well. It's as if the battery is not in the truck. He then proceeded to tear the steering column apart trying to figure out hoe to remove the ignition switch. So I am thinking the ignition switch is the problem. Or is it that actuator that runs down the top of the steering colum??

Had an issue on a different vehicle (i.e., not a Ford) that was similar, and it was a problem with the cables leading off the battery. The clamp at the battery terminal actually worked itself loose from the cable. I'd have no aux, no dash lights, nothing. Fixed the cable and clamp, good to go. Just adding a thought to check the cables.

Heavy yellow wire that comes off the alternator has a fusible link that powers everything in the interior including the ignition switch.

Mine did the same thing about two years ago. I spliced in a new connector and it's been fine ever since......

OK I got the truck home tonight. It ended up being a very simple fix.

first the selinoid was in upside down and was wired wrong and secondly the ignition switch part that is down the steering column under the dash was messed up. Fixed the wire issues and fixed everything the kid I bought it from messed up and the truck fired right up and runs very good!!!!

Took most of the afternoon to figure out what all was hacked up now all I need is a radiator to make it driveable (the kid needed gas money and the truck wasn't running so he scrapped the radiator and the A/C condenser....

Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions
