Cool Sudden Failure yesterday...

Literally 5 minutes before leaving for the airport to fly out to Cali...

I drove over to a friend's house and it ran perfect. Shut it off, went inside to drop off my dogs.
Started it to leave and it felt like it was running on 4 cylinders, didn't die, just barely running. Only live a half mile away so I drove back, barely made it up to 20 mph.

Shut it off when I got home. Started right back up but still running rough. Check Engine light was on, all guages were normal. Popped the hood while it was running and there was a little smoke coming out of the dipstick tube... didn't notice any exhaust smoke.

What could this be? Isn't acting like a CPS... Clogged CCV?

I won't be back from Cali till the 20th so Hopefully you guys can give me some ideas before I get back...

Sounds to me, like one of the under valve cover harnesses decided to meltdown.

Take off your oil fill cap, and smell either the cap or the fill point if you can get to it. If it smells of burnt electrical insulation, that's probably the problem. A quick check anyway.

Check your oil and UVCH plugs.

Hey........I know this sounds stupid but.........did you happen to fill up and put gasoline in it instead of Diesel..........I've done this a couple of times when I've got distracted or interrupted when filling up..........get about 4-5 miles and all of a sudden...........it barely runs.............I've just switched to the other tank and went on and siphoned the gas out later......refilled with diesel and all was fine..........

No, definately put diesel in it... pumps were separate between diesel and gas at the station I was at.

You should check first the connectors of the valve cover gaskets for burned pins, if they are OK, you have to take off the valve cover and in that way get acces to the UVCH, they connect the valve cover gasket to the glow plugs and injectors. I think they are not expensive, I got it in IH dealer but I dont remeber the cost.

that's happened to me before when my valve cover harness (exterior) came loose because the clip part was broken off... Definitely check all your electrical connections. is it making any unusual noises? btw - what codes are you getting?

So a dealership is about the only place to get one?

Not really any strange noises. Revving it in park it takes about 10 seconds to rev all the way. Flooring it while driving it barely moved.

Just running very very rough but not to the point of dying, and smoke coming out of the dipstick tube. Didn't notice any smoke from the exhaust at all.

Have to wait till next week when I'm back from Cali to look at it more. I guess I'll be driving the wife's car to work till it's fixed

you said you had a CEL - if you can get the codes, that would be the best place to start... are you still home?

An ability to check the codes is the best place to start.

If it is the UVCH, then here's a good picture to help orient you.
Your Premiere Source for Ford Truck Parts and Accessories

You could need #6584 if it's melted in the valve cover gasket. Or #9D930 if one or more of those cooked. There are repair kits, (or at least were still available a couple years ago when i ordered some, just to have "in stock") if the outer wire harness is where it's cooked. I can't find the part number for them and they're offsite in storage right now. I'm sure someone else has the number, and i can get it in a day or so if you need it.

Your sudden failure is identical to what my son is experiencing on his 2001 f350. He can't check the harness until saturday. Have you resolved it yet and was this the problem?

Yup I,m with these guys sounds like uvc harness since I,ve had my truck I have had to change mine a few times due to old wires and bad glow plugs you can ohm the pins on the outside valve cover connections but more than likely you will see burnt wires on the connectors that plug into the valve covers.

this is what you will probably find when you take the valve covers off

UVC harness unplugged from the gasket you may want to change glow plugs as well I put a switch on my glow plugs and haven,t had a problem since

Good luck
Walter
