Newbie Question

Hey all... I'm new here, and have been quite impressed with the amount of info one can get from this Forum. Maybe I haven't dug deep enough, but I can't seem to find the answer to my question.

I have a 92 F-250 7.3 In the past week or so the thing won't crank
(like the Battries are dead) If I let it sit over night it seems as if something is killing the battries. at first I thought maybe I had a bad Bat. and it was draining the other. I put a brand new 1000CCA in last month... I had the battries both tested and they are good. The only other thing is the Altnator. It went out 2 months ago and we put a new one in. I have a feeling it is good, due to the fact that the battries charge after it's been running
(the Alt. is 190 amps) SO that leads me to the real question.... Do you guys think I am looking at a glow plug relay, or a starter?? I put new G Plugs in 4 months ago. The wait to start light has been staying on super long over the past 6 to 8 months... Is it posabile that the relay is getting stuck on killing the plugs and the battries?

Thanks guys... it seems like there is a really good group of guys here!!

Keep Truckin!

There must be a usage somewhere.... disconnect both batteries..... using a test light connect the positive cable of one battery to the positive post, you may get a light if there is power usage..... now pull each fuse one at a time in the main fuse box to see if the light goes out..... replace if it does not.... when you hit the one that does go out that power system is where the draw from the battery is.

Do check lights ie brake, dash, interior and under hood for remaining on after shutdown.

Also check the alternator for heat after an hour shutdown......

Likely the starter is going to ground internally and draining the batteries. If testing the circuits reveals nothing, I'd say starter!

To see if its the starter, just remove the hot wire going your solenoid, but leave the wire that leads to your starter. If it still dies, its the starter, if not, its some accessory or alt/regulator combo.

Don't laught but my glovebox doesn't always shut quite right (be easy she's a WORE out ranch truck), and the light will stay on and hurt the batteries if left all night. If I'm lucky I can get her to bust off, but its pretty slow cranking.

I've fixed the glovebox shutting problem, but the light is handy to have when trying to find papers in the dark.

SdoubleDeuce,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

After you jump start the engine and it runs for a while charging the batteries, how does the engine start?

Thanks for all the replys.... I took lose the + cable of the battry and put my volt meter to amps and touched the leads to the + post and pos. cable ... I got a reading of 2.3A Today I checked it again and it's a .05A... I unhooked the little red wire that goes to the starter both times but this time I got a small reading.... I also pulled every fuse in the fuse box and checked contaunity... I am gonna think it's the starter.. The other day I was cranking it over and it was turning slow, and all of the sudden it speed up. It seemed as if the fuel shut off relay was still closed and it didn't have to compress any fuel... I'm gonna drink more and maybe it was be very clear what the problem is...
$200.00 for a starter.... They don't even use lube (if you know what I am sayin)

Thanks again
