Me and about 4 of my buddy's all have CB's. You get some of those guys out on the interstate, they tell jokes that would make a sailor blush....

I am a truck driver, and I agree with you guys, 99.9% of talk on the CB is pure trash, and I'm no prude. I am ashamed of my profession many times daily! I keep my CB on all the time in my truck because every once in a while it can save your butt in a traffic situation, but I don't have one in my pickup and probably never will because I don't need my kids learning any more filth, they get enough of that from the T.V. Sorry for the O.T. rant.

I have to disagree... sort of....your comment is nowhere NEAR being OT and is perfectly in line with the kind of perspectives the OP was looking for. Thanks for bellying up with with excellent information.

I like the cobra 25 and 29 series with firestick 4' or 5' antenna, not because they are the best but I am familiar with them. I generally turn the squelch up so I only hear the people in my group primarily because of the foul manners you encounter. I like the cbs because they so outperform the "family" fm for communicating on the road or in the mountains 4 wheeling.

I do not ever listen to channel 19 or 21. I have one for a couple reasons. When traveling with another vehicle I give them a handheld CB that I have so we can talk. And when I tow my Jeeps we all convoy up in a group of 10 to 20. We use channel 4, for you know, 4 wheel drive. And we all have CBs.
On the occasional traffic jam, those truckers can be of some help to let you know what's going on. Then you can determine whether to wait or detour. And a lot of those are actually nice and will tell you to follow them around, or tell you you how to do it.

When I had mine in my van it came in handy more for the built-in weather radio. The antennae setup wasn't too good on that so I hope it will be better in the middle of the roof.

Uniden Pro 510XL. You're not going to get a 5 mile range in the mountains though, unless you're on the top of one.

Oh and another good thing about the 102" whip, is it tends to keep other vehicles at bay, especially at highway speeds. One time as I rounded a turn it whipped over and tapped another car waiting at a light. He was looking around trying to figure what that was, and I just kept going. ooops.

Around $50. Shop around, there are deals out there. Ebay has a ton of them new and used.

I too have a Uniden Pro with a 4' firestick antenna that I mounted opposite my radio antenna through the plastic hood vent and into the body. I had it tuned by the local pro with a SWR meter, and I get reasonable reception on the freeways (~5 miles) and great reception and range out on the flats (~12 miles).

I mounted mine under the dash next to where I mounted my brake controller, and my 6'3" frame clears with both of my gangly legs no problem.

Although I use it for chatting with folks out on the farm, some convoy chatting, and for reaching my fishing buddies from the shore, I find that the most use I get out of it is the 7 weather channels that mine receives. NOAA channels are far more concise and accurate than the BS I have to listen to on the local chatter radio stations.

I also use the PA to yell at idiots who cut me off, don't use their turn signals, or otherwise need to be publicly humiliated for being dumber than a post. =)

Subscribing, as I'll soon be putting a Uniden PC78LTW (what I run in my Jeep) in the truck - once I figure out where. I like the wx/alert functions as much as the 2-way.

Exactly why I never put a PA in any of my vehicles, if the other drivers heard what I'm usually saying about them I'd probably get shot.
