HI everyone! i have an early 99 f-350 with 61,000 miles on it. I recently installed an edge evo II, 4" magnaflow exhaust, 6637 mod filter, and had the tranny built. I have used it alot this past winter pulling an enclosed trailer for snowmobiling and i have noticed that the turbo is starting to wine. Is this normal? before it had a nice whistle to it but is now starting to wine. I still makes good boost, but was wondering if maybe the turbo is about to ***** on me. ANy info is appreciated! Thanks
Pull the intake off and check the wheel for signs of dusting- the fins should be straight and smooth. Next, grab the nut in the middle of the compressor wheel and try to wiggle it- a little bit of side to side movement is normal (as long as the wheel doesn't rub the housing) but ANY in and out movement means time for a rebuild or a new turbo.
I know its not the 6637 cuz i just put it on and i was wining before i removed the stock air box. has this been a problem with the early 99's? How can you wear out a tubo in 61,000 miles?
I believe it is! When i have my foot in it, it wines very little but as soon as you back off the throttle or slowly roll on it you can hear it wine and it is pretty bad.
Do the test that Chase posted up. That will tell you in a hurry if your turbo is shot or not.
Several things to note about the early 99 turbo. It comes stock with the "Wicked Wheel", so the turbo whine on an early 99 turbo is more pronounced and louder than a 99.5+ 7.3L.
Swapping from an early to a late 99+ turbo is not a direct bolt on. The turbo pedistal, up-pipes, intake spider, etc are all different on your truck and would have to all be swapped out just to bolt in a stocker. It's more hassle than it's worth for a stock-to-stock swap. If you plan do do that much work, at minimum you'll want to throw in a BB turbo.
Thanks for the info Pocket! I underatand what needs to be changed but if my turbo is bad that what i want to do. Question is? is there much performance increase with the newer 7.3 turbo and supporting hardware?

Not for a stock turbo, no. If you went with a BB turbo (GTP 38R) or some other turbo (H2E) then yes.
