Had my 06' XLT 4x4 Screw with 36,500 on the clock in for an oil change yesterday. They called me and said the front differential fluid was milky and needed replaced. No big deal, go ahead and replace it, right? Well, it got me wondering what would have caused this? I thought it wouldnt need replaced for quite some time. I'm the second owner, but the truck is immaculate inside and out. Anyway, I was just wanting to get some thoughts on this, and see if anyone else has had the same issue? Maybe get some ideas on what caused it. Thanks in advance!
Most likely I am wrong on this but could this be caused by water getting inside and contaminating the fluid?

Thats what I was thinking, but didnt know how this might happen. I would think it would take quite a bit of playing in water to make that happen. Maybe I'm wrong? Maybe it was tainted from the factory? Maybe it was replaced with something bad? Maybe it has something leaking into it, but what? I was just kind of wondering what others had expierenced, if anything.
that milky substance is actually very normal for these trucks...general consensus is that it is assembly lube mixed in with the diff fluid.
the front axle never really gets turned, so it seperates...and looks like water
it obviosly won't do any harm to change out...and ask your mechanic to save the fluid. let it sit in a bucket. if water, you'll see it seperate and the diff fluid will sit on top, and any water will be under it all in the bottom of the bucket.
