Hyd roller cam
Hyd roller cam
So I was over at my friends house after school the other day and me and his dad were talking about Fords. Well I mentioned that I was going to put a cam in my truck and he said I should go with the E303, he uses it in both of his Comets, but he also added he ahad the hyd roller retro fit kit that he would sell to me for 75 bucks. So now I was looking at cams and didn't really know what to pick. I'm on a budget here so don't want to spend a whole lot, only in high school here. The two cams I'm looking at are the Lunati 81302 and the Trick Flow 51402000. Which one of these would better benefit my truck. At the moment it's a 302, 289 heads, professional products typhoon intake, performer 600 carb, flowtech headers, full 2.25 exh, and 40 series flowmasters.
Cam specs
Lunati
Dur. 220/220 at .050 lift (281 advertised)
lift .512/.512

Trick Flow
Dur. 221/225 at .050 lift (275/281 advertised)
lift .499/.510

Thanks for any help.

But not a whole lot IMO, too much duration for a 302 truck motor. Installing a roller cam in an older block is always expensive, you need the linkbar lifters which are big bucks or you have to use a small base circle retrofit cam and the late model factory lifters with the roller retrofit kit. In both cases it's going to cost you $500+ while you can have a flat tappet cam and lifters for $100 and get the same power out of the motor.
A retrofit kit like the one below typically includes the spider and dogbones only, you still need the lifters and cam and the cam alone is usually over $250 and there are not nearly as many to pick from compared to the regular cams.

Well the kit he has the dog bones, spider, and lifters. All I need is the cam, both of the cam I was looking at were pretty cheap, 130 for one and 170 for the other. I thought the two I was looking at are pretty mild, nothing to extreme but idk.
Can you post the grind numbers for those cams? I'm guessing they are not retrofit cams at that price.
Also sounds like he is including stock Ford lifters with the kit? If so that means you have to use a special small base circle cam(retrofit cam) because if you don't the lifters will stick too far out of the lifter bores at the top of the cam lobe, and that will result in a very noisy valvetrain as the dogbodes are repeatedly lifted off and slapped back to the block.

Well I'm not sure what kind of lifter they are, all I know is he used the kit for both of his Comets (both have a 302, one has 289 head like my truck does), he uses the E303 cam and has no problems. I guess I need to ask him what kit it is, Btw the two cam doesn't say they are a retro-fit so I'm guessing they are not. Also the link bar type lifters I found a full set of crower lifter for 220. I'm learning something though, at least its not the hard way.
