I have a 2006 F250 PSD and the 4x4 and Low Range dash lights do not work. The truck will engage in high range & low range 4x4 but neither light works. I have check all fuses and it seems unlikely that the bulbs could be bad. After doing a little research it seems like the problem could be with the sensor in the differential. Any thoughts or additional suggestions are appreciated.
If the truck is engaging in high and low range, I would think it could not be a problem with the sensor (gear motor encoder is the "proper" term), because the sensor has to report to the 4WD control module that the shift is complete before it will do anything like lock the hubs, or allow it to continue on to low, etc.
If the sensor had not reported back to the 4WD control module that the shift to 4WD was complete, I would think the module would turn the motor back to 2WD and try again. That's the normal behavior for an incomplete shift, try 3 or 4 times and then give up.
I hate to say it but it almost sounds like a problem with the console, or the 4WD control module. Have you checked that the console lights are working? They should come on for a second when you turn the key to ON during the console light test. There is also a test you can perform on the console, you can try searching "console test" to see if you can find it. It would help you verify the console lights are indeed working.
Also, as a long shot, have you had the codes read by a competent mechanic? The 4WD control module can set a small handful of codes, but they are not regular ECM/PCM codes, so I don't know how they are typically read.
Thanks for the info, I'll try the console light test. The 4x4 & low range lights do not come on when the key is switched to the ON position. I have also noticed that the cruise control indicator (which is directly above the 4x4) also does not illuminate when the key is in the ON position, however the indicator comes on when the cruise control is activated.
I performed the instrument cluster test and both the 4x4 and low range lights come on so it's definitely not bad bulbs. However, the lights don't come on when starting the truck or when 4x4 high or low range is engaged.
