I recently pulled the 460 engine in my very original 1979 Camper special in order to do some maintenance(oil pan gasket, rear main, timing chain, and exhaust gaskets) that would have been a PITA in the truck. While I've got the engine out I'm going to paint it and I would like to detail the engine bay. It spent some time in Arizona and is kinda dusty. I'm not going to go wild and paint the firewall, but I would like to clean everything up and repaint some items. just to give it a cleaner appearance.
I have some questions.
what would be the correct finish for the inner fenders?
what gloss of black should I use on the core support, battery box and A/C housing?
I think the inner fenders originally had a galvanized coating on them. At least mine appeared to. I used PlastiKote "Rebuilder's Cast Gray(285)" on them and I think it looks pretty good. As far as the pulleys and core support go, I used PlastiKote "Low Gloss Black(215)" on those. Actually, the core support is original in this picture, the radiator is low gloss black. You really don't want anything really shiny there. Eastwood has all kinds of coatings for taking care of rusty frames.
You could get it galvanized again, but I don't know if it's a possibility. Don't know about cleaning; never attempted it. Maybe with something abrasive?

I think galvanizing is a chemical dip. which probably wont work. damn.
does anyone know the correct color for the engine paint? is it light or dark blue?
Yeah, I don't know if you can get anything galvanized today with the EPA and whatnot.
Original engine color was dark blue.
You can still get it done, but the finish is different than original. I actually believe the inner fenders were finished in a cold galvanizing zinc compound spray. but I'm not sure.
I know this is crazy talk,
but has anyone ever seen a radiator stripped down to the brass and polished?
Maintaining it would be a chore, I just always thought it would look cool.

Ha!
Goes to show how closed off I am to all of this stuff,
goin' fast and lookin' slick with all of the cool kids.
I thought I came up with a good idea. Oh well.
