I have a 2000 f250 V10 with 89000 miles on it.About 3 weeks ago it started making a loud tapping noise when I start it up in the mornings. Sometimes it goes away slowly as the engine warms up.(2-3 minutes). But a few times it stopped tapping instantly. I have been using Napa full synthetic for about the last 10,000 miles. I thought it might be a sticking valve so I added some top cylinder lube to the gas. (marvels mystery oil). But it didn't help. Does anyone know what it could be? Are there any common problems to look for. The oil pressure gauge shows good pressure. Right where it has always been. It has always been very smooth and quiet starting before, even on very cold mornings. Any comments would be great. Thanks
Budman
I might get corrected here, but old school technology was to put in a quart of transmission fluid in with the motor oil when you do an oil change. It would help clean up things.
could be lifter/cam. i know some of the early 5.4 had oil issues but i didn't think they affected the v10. not sure how you would test the lifters to see if they hold oil or not. if the oil gauge is like our temp gauge , its just an idiot light with a needle, might be a good idea to check pressure with a real gauge
Take a look at your exaust manifold bolts, I'll bet that there are one or two broken bolts. My 02 V10 has 2 or 3 broken bolts. It has that tick until everything warms up and expands. You can get a pretty good look from behind the front tires, fender well area.

That would be a BAD idea with an overhead cam engine like the Ford modular. Too many small oil holes that could get plugged up with the slightest bit of dirt.
It is a very fast tapping sound. I can really hear it when I let off of the gas pedal. The tapping then slows down as the rpms go down. Can a loose spark plug make a sound like this? I think it still has the factory plugs.
