Cam question????

I have a 351 Windsor and i just had it machined and the bottom end put in and I put the cam in and and the thrust plate on and I looked down the Lifter bores and the right side of the engine all of the lobes are offset towards the front of the engine and on the left side all the lobes are towards the rear of the engine is this normal??? I figured that all the lobes would be centered in the lifter bores?!?! Any Info would be greatly appreciated THANKS

How bad is is? The entire cam lobe need to touch the lifter, but I think they keep them a little way off of center to get the lifter to spin in its bore. Lifters need to rotate to wear properly. If you have the cam lobe hanging over the side of the lifter there is something very wrong.

It's normal with a flat tappet camshaft. The lobes are offset to run on the outer edge of the lifter face, as johnboy427 mentioned, to make the lifters rotate in the bores. The lobes are rounded too, to minimize the contact area.

Roller lifter camshafts, on the other hand, have the lobes centered in the bores, because the lifters are locked together with plates, and aren't allowed to rotate in the bores. (a sideways roller is a bad thing)
