well just landed a toolbox for 20 bucks, woundering about the best way of mounting it so theives couldent lift it out but also so i dont have to tear up my bed... here are the 3 options i've come up with
-self tapping sheet metal screws
-drill a hold and bolt it
-two sided tape
dont really like the tape idea, but hate to put holes in my otherwise perfect bed, what should i do?
I just put a Aluminum one in a friends truck, he didn't want to drill the bed rail, so I fabbed up some plates that pinch it from under the bed rails. We also put one sided sticky foam on the bed rail to prevent chaffing.
No damage installation!
The only way to get it off is to open it and remove the bolts.
Of course you can't stop a thief, you can only slow them down, and stop the honest.
The following is my personal opinion and is just that, My opinion!
Don't use self tapping screws, they'll pull loose in time, To much flex in the bed.
Besides they tear the heck out of the bed rails ...
Not to mention, if a thief finds it's held on with self tapping screws, he'll grin, grab a bar and rip that box right off your truck! Kiss your bed rails/sides goodbye along with your tool box.
If you're going to poke holes in your bed rails go for full bolts with fender washers.
If you have inner liner, holes saw access holes.
gimmie some more info about those plated you fabbed up.... would love to be able to do that but i'm no good af fabbing up parts, except the neckred mudflap mounting bracket i'm gonna make out of a twin bed frame...
Cool, Didn't know Lowes sold something like that, Will have to check em out.
My brackets were very simple, just a L shaped strip the width of the box (front to back), the short leg up under the bed rail, the long leg down along the box, two holes through the box and long side of the bracket and a couple bolts, duplicate on other side.
I did weld the nuts to the bracket, this prevents it from being removed except from within the tool box.
The toolbox on my '05 F-150 from TSC came with "J" hooks that hooked onto the bottom lip of the bed rails, and bolted through the toolbox. Stayed put for over a year and 15k miles so far.....no problems yet!
Just so you know, J hooks do work well, but can leave dimples showing on the top of your bed rail.
I've welded a piece 3/16"x1"x1" flat bar to the tips to spread the load, crude but effective!
Yea, I also glued rubber to em to protect the underside... (I'm just that way)
well gonna look into that lowes no drill bracket system, if that is within my price range thats the way i'll go. unfortunately i have neither welder nor welder skills.... so that kills a handfull of options....
EDIT: if anyone has the time and effort to find me a link to the lowes bracket that would be great!
well ran by lowes a few days ago, no such luck will only work with a truck that has a inside lip, my flairside has a outside lip... so i decided to put blocks of wood in the post holes and simply drill into those instead of the bed... will be pretty easy to steal but its better than having it slide around my bed all the time!
yeah i'll get pictures up as soon as i get my camera back... flairsides have post holes in each corner of the bed, you can KINDA see one here...
see the bottom of it on the far right...
