Couple questions

Hey guys,

I just bought a 2001 F250 Crewcab 4x4 lariat. It has an 8in lift with 38in tires. I love everything about the truck so far, I just have a couple questions.

First off, The fuel gauge suddenly stopped working. The dash always reads full now and the overhead computer always reads something different. I've heard the sending units go bad and often need to be replaced. Does that seem to be the case here.

My second question is about gears. I did a search here and most of what I found was for towing. This truck is my DD and I rarely tow with it. I was told the truck was regeared by Ford when the original owner bought it, but I don't have any paper work stating that. When the wheels turns one full turn the drive shaft turns 4 1/4 times. My buddies say I should be running wither 4.56 or 4.88 gears. What would be better for my 38/15.5/16.5 tires?

My last question is for the CA guys. Is the ebay y-pipe legal here in CA? I don't want to have it welded in and then have to have it cut out every time to pass smog. Are there also any intakes that are CA legal?

Thanks guys and I will try to post pictures here soon.

with the gears......... if your turning 4-1/4 turns, your probably running a 4.30 gear in there right now.

what are your cruising rpm's? if it's a daily driver you'll probably be ok with the 4.30's........ 4.88's would give you alittle more off the line grunt, but if you don't tow much at all with it, a gear swap might not be justified.

Get an Oasis report thru the Superduty Forum in here. If the gears were replaced by a dealership, it will at least show up on there and tell you what dealership did it. Might be able to call them and verify what gears you do have in there.

Yes it sounds like the sending unit is bad.

CA guy here.
Technically, ANY change that does not have a CARB EO number assigned to it is illegal.

Practically, I have never had a vehicle failed for "minor" exhaust changes like the Y-pipe as most smog technicians know it is extremely unlikely to affect emmisions. I have had many vehicles pass with changes like that with not even an eyebrow raised. Headers or intake tubing without an EO number would be much more likely to fail as they could affect emmisions.
